Livonia Mourns the Loss of Former Mayor Dennis Wright
Livonia is a city that is coming together in a time of sorrow as it mourns the passing of a cherished friend and mentor, former Mayor Dennis Wright, who passed away on Thursday, October 3, at the age of 72. Known for his genuine heart and dedication to the community, Wright was elected as the city’s 11th mayor, serving from 2016 until 2019 when he stepped down after a brave battle with Parkinson’s disease.
A Dream Come True
When asked about his time as mayor, Wright described it as “a dream.” He cherished the opportunity to serve the people of Livonia, emphasizing that the best part of the job was “helping people.” In the words of Wright, “It’s been a great ride, it really has.” This sentiment resonates deeply in the hearts of those he served.
Major Contributions to Livonia
During his years in office, Wright championed several significant initiatives that helped shape the future of Livonia. He took the lead in constructing the delightful Dog Park at Bicentennial Park and spearheaded the community build of a universally accessible playground at Rotary Park. He brought the community together again with events like the Merry & Bright Holiday Parade and played a pivotal role in hosting the moving Vietnam Moving Wall event at Ford Field in Detroit.
Beyond his mayoral duties, Dennis was a fixture in local sports, serving as a longtime coach and president of the Livonia Junior Athletic League. He was integral in planning the Kirksey Recreation Center, working tirelessly to get the necessary funding through a millage campaign.
Furthermore, Wright was a co-founder of Livonia Kids and Families, now known as Breaking Barriers for Kids and Families. Through this charity, he mobilized civic-minded business leaders, rallying resources to provide food, financial aid, and Christmas gifts to families in need.

Livonia Mayor Maureen Miller Brosnan reflected on Wright’s lasting impact, calling him a “true servant leader.” She stated, “He leaves behind a legacy of caring for children and families in need in our community.” Mayor Brosnan also commended Wright for his commitment to developing a long-range, community-driven master plan known as Livonia Vision 21 that aims to propel the city forward.
“In his memory, today is a good day to reach out and lend a hand, the way he did, in service to so many. I call this doing it the ‘Wright Way.’ Go in peace Mayor Wright. Job well done,” Mayor Brosnan added.
A Heart of Gold
In addition to his work as mayor, Dennis Wright proudly served in the U.S. Air Force and owned his hardware store, Wright’s Hardware, on 5 Mile Road for 18 years. It was said that he would go above and beyond to help customers, whether it was solving an appliance problem or tackling an electrical issue. He became a valuable mentor to many business owners and played an important role on the board of the Livonia Chamber of Commerce.
“Dennis was as real as they come,” said Dan West, president of the Chamber. “He always wanted to help people. Whether it was raising money for kids’ sports or helping a family in need, he was genuinely happy watching people solve their problems.” This incredible compassion made him a beloved figure in the community.
