LIVONIA — A New Chapter at Madonna University
Celebrating Leadership and Tradition
On a beautiful Friday, October 11, the Madonna University community gathered with warm hearts to celebrate the inauguration of its eighth president, Christopher Dougherty, Ph.D.. Held in a ceremony filled with both tradition and excitement, the event captured the essence of the Felician spirit, which has long been the foundation of this esteemed institution.
Introducing President Dougherty
President Dougherty stepped into his role on July 1, 2023, taking over from interim president Ian Day. With over three decades of experience in higher education, Dougherty’s journey has been rich and varied. He has worn many hats throughout his career, from a full-time business faculty member to assistant and associate dean, and even provost and president at other institutions. Before coming to Madonna, he was deeply involved with Chestnut Hill College in Philadelphia, where he held positions as an associate professor of business and vice president for academic affairs.
Words of Praise
The inauguration ceremony began with a heartfelt Mass of thanksgiving, setting a lovely tone for the day. Among those in attendance were not only colleagues and university trustees but also students, members of the Felician Sisters, and Livonia Mayor Maureen Miller Brosnan. A special performance by the Madonna University Chorale further enlivened the atmosphere.
Michael Marinelli, Ph.D., the headmaster at Archmere Academy, where Dougherty attended school, spoke eloquently during the event, stating, “Dr. Christopher Dougherty is a man of deep faith, knowledge and experience.” He emphasized how Dougherty’s role in Catholic higher education transcended mere employment, becoming a true ministry aimed at spreading love and wisdom.
A Joyous Mission
In his opening address, Dougherty expressed how deeply humbled and filled with joy he was to accept this new position. He mentioned the theme for the year: “the Lord has done great things for us. We are filled with joy.” This resonates not just personally, but also with the sesquicentennial celebration of the Felician Sisters in North America. The anniversary marks an important milestone — 150 years since five Felician Sisters embarked on a journey from Poland to establish over 40 ministries that serve various communities.
Dougherty reflected on the inspirational stories of the Felician Sisters, noting that both joy and success often arise from humble beginnings. “That same humility informs so many of the experiences that bring me here today,” he remarked, speaking about his previous roles at institutions founded by women religious — Catholic sisters committed to serving their communities.
The Common Threads of Service
He also drew parallels among the roots of several religious orders that have shaped his life and career. Just as the Sisters of the Holy Child of the Americas founded Rosemont College, and the Sisters of St. Joseph sponsored Chestnut Hill College, so too have the Felicians laid a strong foundation for Madonna University.
“It’s amazing to see how stories of faith, dedication, and service connect us all,” Dougherty explained, capturing the audience’s attention with his reflections on how the mission of service is common across various organizations.
Encouraging Words from the Felician Sisters
Sr. Judith Marie Kubicki, CSSF, the provincial minister for the Felician Sisters of North America, shared kind words of support and wishes for success on behalf of the Sisters. She highlighted the significance of leadership, calling it a “gift or charism that a person receives for the flourishing of a particular community.”
Kubicki encouraged Dougherty, stating, “May our good and gracious God bless you with wisdom and courage,” wishing him well as he begins this wonderful journey leading Madonna University into a bright future full of hope.
Looking Ahead
With a promising new leader at its helm, Madonna University looks poised to continue its tradition of excellence in education, grounded in deep faith and community service. As this exciting chapter unfolds, students, faculty, and the greater community eagerly anticipate the positive changes that President Dougherty will surely bring.
In the spirit of the Felician Sisters, the hope is that joy and service will remain central to the university’s mission, guiding everyone involved toward growth, learning, and shared success.
