LaFontaine Motors of Livonia Faces Serious Penalties
Livonia, MI – In a surprising turn of events, LaFontaine Motors, a well-known vehicle dealership local to Livonia, is in hot water with the Michigan Department of State (MDOS). This dealership, also operating under the name LaFontaine Hyundai of Livonia, has recently entered into an agreement with MDOS acknowledging multiple violations of the Michigan Vehicle Code.
What Went Wrong?
So, what exactly happened? It appears LaFontaine Motors ran into trouble for several serious infractions. The state has detailed numerous fraudulent activities that point to the dealership misleading customers in the vehicle sales process. Among the laundry list of violations, MDOS found that LaFontaine:
- Engaged in fraudulent acts related to vehicle sales.
- Misrepresented used vehicles as new.
- Failed to file for title and registration in the buyer’s name within the required 21 days.
- Did not have the title in immediate possession, which should include proper odometer readings.
- Issued temporary registrations incorrectly.
- Did not complete the necessary RD-108 form properly.
- Inappropriately used dealer plates.
- Failed to disclose correct odometer information on sold vehicles.
These violations were revealed during an investigation by MDOS after receiving allegations that the dealership was misleading customers into thinking they were buying brand new vehicles, when in fact, they were used!
What Are the Consequences?
As a result of these findings, LaFontaine Motors’ license was suspended on December 4th. Not just that, but to avoid a lengthy administrative hearing, the dealership has agreed to an alternative penalty agreement. This means they won’t have to go through all the red tape but will face significant consequences nonetheless.
Financial Reckoning on the Horizon
The dealership is set to cough up a hefty $25,000 financial penalty. Along with the fine, they will be under a 24-month probation period. During this time, they must also participate in dealer training programs for both managers and employees within the next 90 days. Just to keep an eye on things, MDOS will conduct periodic unannounced inspections to ensure compliance.
