Michigan and Ohio Rank Among Top ‘Swingers’ States in the Country

Survey reveals surprising results

The term “Swing State” takes on an entirely different meaning as a new study emerges indicating the prevalence of swinger culture within the United States. According to research from Open-Love.org, Michigan and Ohio rank among the top ten ‘swinger’ states in the country, with Michigan ranking fourth and Ohio coming in at tenth.

Details of the Study

The study conducted by Open-Love.org aimed to understand relationship statuses across the country and the propensity towards Open Relationships. The results were unexpected, revealing Michigan and Ohio as two of the top 10 ‘swinger’ states. In Ohio, the data showed 459 people per 100,000 engaged in ‘swinging’, while Michigan had a slightly higher number with 526 people per 100,000 participating in the lifestyle.

Surprisingly, Florida – often associated with a more sexually expressive older population – only had 453 people per 100,000, putting it narrowly within the top 15. The state leading the pack, however, was Pennsylvania, with 660 people per 100,000 showing interest in the swinger culture.

Understanding “Swinging”

Swinging is an aspect of what some refer to as ‘Ethical Non-Monogamy.’ This practice involves partner swapping for sexual pleasure. Despite becoming a mainstream conversation topic in the 60s and 70s, the size of the culture remains relatively small in the U.S., with estimates ranging from 2-5% of the total population.

Some experts suggest that many married couples indulge in swinging to strengthen their relationships and decrease the risk of divorce. This lifestyle, however, requires an immense amount of communication with partners.

Signs of a Swinger

Those outside the lifestyle can often identify swingers by various ‘tells’ or visual cues present in their home or accessories. These indicators may include:

  • An upside-down pineapple
  • Garden decor such as a pink flamingo, garden gnome, or pampas grass on the front lawn
  • A black ring worn on the right hand
  • Prominently displayed large mirrors and a hot tub in the backyard

They are taken collectively these signs can indicate a swinger, although they could also be coincidental, it’s important not to jump to conclusions.

What This Means

This surprising data sheds light on diverse relationship practices across the U.S. As societal norms continue to evolve, studies such as this from Open-Love.org are becoming essential in understanding the shifting dynamics of relationships and sexual preferences in America.
