Exciting Culinary Debuts and Closures: Detroit Food Scene Update

Hey, Detroit foodies! We have some exciting news for you. Last month, we saw a heap of cool new eateries open up. From a swanky Irish pub to a family diner and a fun hangout in Ferndale, there’s something for everyone. True, there were a few doors closing too, but don’t worry because the new openings really outnumbered them. Let’s dive into all the culinary happenings across the city.

Doyles Irish Pub at Saint John’s Resort in Plymouth is the newest addition to a lovely 200-acre resort. The decor is super Instagram-worthy, with tartan wall coverings, cool leather seating, and stunning Irish street photography. You can relax on an outdoor patio overlooking a golf course or enjoy some fun and games in a 3,700-square-foot yard. The menu is a delightful mash-up of traditional fare, like fish and chips and sumptuous daily pot pies, alongside modern twists like Celtic Benedict and roasted brick chicken.

Moving on, we have the humble Maxhari’s Family Restaurant in Brownstown. They kicked off mid-July and are serving up everything from soup and puddings to super yummy cheese sticks and chili dogs. With a rotating daily soup list and a firm belief in bringing the family together, they even offer a kid’s and a seniors’ menu. Plus, they’re open all week.

Got a sweet tooth? Then you can’t miss the Peach Cobbler Factory in Detroit. This much-awaited dessert spot serves up a drool-worthy selection of fruit cobblers, banana puddings, Belgian waffles and a whole lot more. And if you’re indecisive, they also offer a $24 dessert flight. Yum!

Then there’s Scout in Ferndale, a comfortable retreat with a genuine “up north Michigan” vibe. It’s still in the soft-opening phase, but already promises to be a great spot for drinks and fun with its house-turned-bar set-up and pinball games. The food and pizza service is still gearing up, but hey, drinks only for this week isn’t too bad, right?

Other exciting debuts in July included a new Chipotle Mexican Grill outlet with a drive-thru, a fresh Dave’s Hot Chicken location, an innovative Elephant & Co. featuring 50 self-serve taps, a grand reopening for Finjan Cafe, a new Lee’s Famous Recipe Chicken and an additional branch named Pink Garlic known for its Indian cuisine. Portillo’s opened its second Detroit location, and Shankar Distillers also opened its stylish taproom. That’s a whole lot of new options for your taste buds to explore!

Unfortunately, we also had to say goodbye to a few favorites. Included among the July closings were Bandit Tavern and Hideway, Buca di Beppo, Detroit Institute of Bagels, The Morrie, and Smuggler’s Run. We’ll miss them and wish them the best for future ventures.
