Kamala Harris Secures Necessary Votes for Democratic Nomination
Securing the Nomination
The Democratic National Committee, in a statement issued on Friday, declared that Vice President Kamala Harris has successfully secured sufficient delegates for the Democratic Party’s nomination. The outcome sets the stage for Ms. Harris to make history as the first Black woman, as well as the first person of South Asian heritage, to secure the top spot on a major political ticket for president.
The official declaration is expected to happen on Monday, following a virtually conducted roll call vote, as announced by the party chair, Jaime Harrison, during an online meeting for supporters, while the voting was still in the process.
Harris Responds to the Announcement
Ms. Harris, on getting the news, expressed to the meeting participants that she was “honored to be the presumptive Democratic nominee.” She voiced excitement for the upcoming convention, planned to commence in Chicago on August 19. In her words: “Later this month, we will gather in Chicago, united as one party, where we’re going to have an opportunity to celebrate this historic moment together.”
Chaos Leading to the Nomination
The official announcement acts to cap what has been a tumultuous five weeks for the Democrats. The party had been pushing to persuade President Biden to drop his re-election bid after a less than stellar debate performance against former President Donald J. Trump in June. Post the endorsement of Ms. Harris by Mr. Biden, following his withdrawal last month, her securing the nomination was widely expected.
Amidst all these developments, Mrs. Harris has been successful in rallying her party remarkably quickly, raising in excess of $200 million and hosting rallies that drew thousands. Reflecting these developments, the party base also seemed to be energised.
Looking Forward
With nominations in place, attention now turns to the performance of Harris amidst a politically charged atmosphere. As the presumptive nominee, Harris will lead the Democratic ticket, looking to secure the highest office in the land. Her nomination ushers in a historic milestone, one she will undoubtedly carry into the campaign.
