Hey Detroit! Guess what? The good folks over in Wayne County have spoken, and they’re pretty happy with what they’ve got. According to the latest elections, they’ve decided to keep their current democratic officials. Yep, you heard it right. They also passed two proposals by a good margin. Here’s the full scoop.
Our sitting County Prosecutor, Kym Worthy, is going to stick around for another term. She ran solo, unopposed in the Democratic race, so she’s got our support till the next elections. We also favored our current sheriff, Raphael Washington, with just over 115,000 votes (64 percent), against his opponent, who got about 63,000 votes.
Now, come November, Washington will face a new challenger, Republican candidate T.P. Nykoriak. We’ll see how that goes, right?
Also, big shoutout to our County Clerk, Cathy Garrett, who’s holding on to her position for another term. We think she’s been doing a pretty decent job, with over 157,000 votes (88 percent) in her favor in the Democratic primary. And guess what? There’s no Republican on the horizon to challenge her in November.
Same goes for County Treasurer, Eric Sabree. He’ll stay in office for another term, with no contenders in sight from the Republican party either.
Our registrar of deeds, Bernard Youngblood, received a solid 169,000 votes in the Democratic race, now set to run against Republican Afaf Ahmed come November.
And this isn’t just for the city, folks. All 43 cities and townships of the county have confirmed their trust in their County Commission representatives. So clap it up for them!
Now, as for the two proposals that passed, we said “Yes!” to both. Proposal P renews the property tax dedicated to public parks. And Proposal A amends the procedures for selecting financial auditing firms. Makes sense, doesn’t it?
Cheers were especially loud for the renewal of the Property Tax Dedicated to Public Parks. Over 181,000 voters (74.4 percent) said yes to continuing this tax for the next five years. This means our parks will continue to have adequate funding. Ain’t that great?
Moreover, more than half of us, about 120,000 voters (54.2 percent), agreed to change how we pick financial auditing firms by reducing contract periods to three years. This definitely sounds like a good move!
