Canton Man Arrested for First Degree Murder

A shocking scene unfolded in Canton Township when a local resident was charged with first degree murder. The man, Devereaux Christopher Johnson, aged 47, was formally accused earlier today in the Plymouth 35th District Court for the murder of his neighbor Nathan Morris, 35, following a confrontation.

The incident, which occurred in the 200 block of Cornell Street on a quiet Saturday morning, has rocked the community and elicited heartfelt condolences for the victim’s family.

Johnson, the person at the center of this tragedy, is facing serious charges including: Homicide – Murder First Degree – Premeditated, Weapons – Firearms – Possession by a Felon, as well as two counts of Felony Firearm. These are severe charges; The first degree murder charge itself carries a life sentence without parole, while possession of firearms by a felon could mean an additional 5-year sentence.

The chilling event is made more disturbing considering Johnson’s past. He was convicted of sexual assault in Nevada in 2005 and is listed on the Michigan Sex Offender Registry.

Judge James Plakas presiding over the case ordered Johnson to be held at the Wayne County Jail without bond. His next appearance in the 35th District Court has been scheduled for August 23, 2024.

This heartbreaking incident comes following a tragic shooting that shocked the Canton neighborhood. The increased violence in this community has residents on edge and has called for reassurance from law enforcement officials on their safety.
