Plymouth-Canton Receives Grant to Change School Mascot

In an exciting development for the Plymouth-Canton community, the local schools have been granted a whopping sum of $145,894.40 to overhaul their current school mascot.

Plymouth-Canton Community Schools bagged this substantial grant from the Native American Heritage Fund to aid in the rebranding of Canton High School’s mascot. After considerable deliberation and voting, the students have decided to adopt the new mascot of the Cobras!

The school administrators have expressed their gratitude for the benevolent contribution from the Native American Heritage Fund. They’re buzzing with optimism about this new chapter, as the Canton High School gets prepped to don its new avatar under the charismatic lead of the Cobras.

Did you know? The funds awarded in the grant are designated to cover the likely expenses of updating uniforms, logos, and other trinkets associated with the new mascots. This rebranding movement was sparked by the Canton High School students themselves, who took the courageous step to rename their school mascot last year. Their collective vision led to this iconic change in the school’s identity.

As November rolled around, after rigorous rounds of surveys for potential names, a majority of the students voted for the Cobras. This initiative sets a remarkable precedent, in line with the Plymouth-Canton Community Schools board policy.

The Native American Heritage Fund (NAHF) is a prominent public body in Michigan that frequently awards grants to schools, universities, and local governments. Through their support, they fuel initiatives intended to improve curricula and resources associated to Native American issues and changes in icons, mascots, and imagery.

While this news marks the end of one era, it’s also the dawn of another more exciting chapter, and the Plymouth-Canton community couldn’t be more thrilled to welcome the Cobras. So next time you cheer on for the Canton High team, remember to hiss!
