Explore the Roush Automotive Collection in Livonia

Located in the heart of Livonia, Michigan, the Roush Automotive Collection is a hidden gem for car enthusiasts and history buffs alike. Situated near the intersection of Plymouth and Levan roads, this vast garage boasts an impressive lineup of about 115 classic cars, many of which have fascinating stories tied to Jack Roush, a prominent figure in NASCAR and the auto industry.

A Tribute to a Flying Ace

As visitors walk into the collection, they are welcomed by a striking silver Mustang adorned with a bright red spoiler and a yellow front bumper, affectionately known as “Old Crow.” This eye-catching vehicle pays homage to Brig. Gen. Bud Anderson, a distinguished WWII pilot who flew multiple P-51 Mustangs, including ones named Old Crow. Anderson’s legacy lives on, as he signed the car before his passing in May at the age of 102. “We built this car to honor Bud,” shares Dale McClenaghan, who is intimately connected to Roush, being the husband of his daughter.

A Family Legacy

Jack Roush, 82, is not just an automotive icon but also a devoted family man. He founded the RFK Racing team and was inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame in 2019. Despite his accomplishments, to his children, he is simply known as “Dad.” His daughter, Susan Roush McClenaghan, manages the collection and brings a personal touch to the family’s automotive legacy.

“Being his daughter provided unique opportunities, but he’s just a dad to me,” Susan reflects. She has made a name for herself in the racing world as a six-time national champion, demonstrating that the Roush family is deeply entrenched in the motorsport industry.

The Purpose Behind the Collection

In the 1980s, Roush began assembling his collection, driven by the desire to preserve the history of his company’s innovative work in racing. “If these cars weren’t preserved, they might end up badly neglected or lost,” shares Tyler Wolfe, the collection’s archivist. In 2000, Susan moved the collection to its current expansive 30,000-square-foot location, ensuring these automotive treasures could be appreciated by the public.

Events That Make History

For racing fans, the Roush Automotive Collection offers an opportunity to see nearly 40 retired NASCAR race cars, many driven by Roush’s team members. This venue not only serves as a display of car history but also hosts various corporate events and unique experiences for sponsors and motorsport enthusiasts.

Connections and Memories

The collection is filled with personal stories and connections. Susan and Dale met in their teenage years and have since created a life around their shared passion for cars. Dale keeps his own racing vehicles in the collection, including a 1960 Ford Falcon and a 1975 Mustang II, showcasing their hands-on involvement in racing and car culture.

The Wreckage with a Story

Among the intriguing exhibits in the collection is the wreckage of a small aircraft, which tells a harrowing tale. Jack Roush survived a serious plane crash in 2002 thanks to the brave efforts of a local hero who saved him from drowning. Susan recalls, “It took the coordinated effort of many to ensure his rescue and survival.” This serves as a reminder of both the dangers of aviation and the strength of community.

A Notable Beginning

One of the most important cars in the collection is a blue 1969 Mustang convertible, emblematic of the beginnings of Roush’s racing empire. In 1971, after parting ways with a racing partner, Roush drove this very car to victory at the NHRA U.S. Nationals. The $5,000 won then helped kickstart what would grow into Roush Enterprises.

Historical Electric Vehicles

The collection also features the oldest vehicle, a 1913 Rauch & Lang electric Brougham, showcasing early advancements in electric vehicle technology. Once sold for $4,500, this car reflects the rich history of automotive innovation that lives on in today’s world.

Visiting the Collection

Open to the public Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., the Roush Automotive Collection invites everyone to witness the fusion of family history, racing legend, and automotive excellence. The collection is a celebration not only of cars but of the memories, challenges, and triumphs that define the Roush family and their significant impact on the automotive world.

As the automotive industry continues to evolve, places like the Roush Automotive Collection ensure that the legacy of speed, innovation, and family remains alive for generations to come.
