Advanced work improves electric reliability for Livonia

Since the fall of 2023, Livonia has been undergoing major enhancements to its electric circuits, thanks to the dedicated efforts of DTE Energy. The energy company identified eight key circuits across the city that were found to be underperforming. This led to a strategic plan set in motion to make essential improvements aimed at boosting the electric reliability for Livonia’s residents and businesses.

These focused efforts span across circuits servicing a variety of customers within the city, including critical areas such as the municipal complex—home to city hall, first responders, and the heating/cooling centers. Additionally, circuits tied to local businesses and thousands of residential properties have also been targeted.

To date, all eight circuits have received significant upgrades. Over 50 miles of system improvement work have been completed, showcasing the extensiveness of this project. These upgrades involved thorough inspections by the company’s Engineering and Operations team, resulting in the replacement and upgrade of various equipment including more than 200 power poles and many other components like pole top equipment and animal guards.

Another crucial aspect of this project has been comprehensive tree trimming. Initial targeted trimming has been completed for most of the circuits, with further maintenance planned throughout the rest of the year. By the end of 2024, nearly 120 miles of tree trimming and tree removal will have been completed citywide, ensuring that 98% of Livonia will be back on a regular tree trim schedule.

Tree branches contacting electrical equipment is a major cause of power outages, accounting for half of the downtime experienced by customers. By keeping branches away from power lines, especially during extreme weather events, the overall electric reliability is expected to improve significantly.
