News Summary

MidPen Housing has started construction on Oak Gardens, a new affordable housing community dedicated to veterans in Menlo Park, California. The project features 62 apartments designed to support low-income veterans and their families, with a focus on those experiencing homelessness. Amenities include landscaped spaces and community support services, aiming to create a nurturing environment. This initiative is backed by public and private partnerships, showing a commitment to providing housing for those who have served the nation.

MidPen Housing Kicks Off Construction on Oak Gardens for Veterans

In a heartwarming turn of events, MidPen Housing has officially broken ground on a new affordable housing community known as Oak Gardens in a welcoming neighborhood. This exciting project is focused entirely on our brave veterans, allowing them to find a comfortable place to call home in Menlo Park, California. The location is quite special, tucked away on the grounds of the VA Palo Alto Health Care system campus, proudly owned by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

A Home for Heroes

Oak Gardens is truly designed with the needs of veterans in mind, featuring a total of 62 apartments, including two special units reserved for managers. Each apartment will serve veterans and their families, specifically catering to those with incomes ranging from 30 to 50 percent of the Area Median Income (AMI). This initiative aims to provide a supportive and nurturing environment for those who have given so much for our country.

Making Housing Affordable

To ensure affordability, the project will include 35 HUD-VASH project-based vouchers, which are crucial for enhancing the financial accessibility of these new homes. A significant focus of Oak Gardens will be on helping those who need it most, as 55 of the apartments will be prioritized for households currently experiencing homelessness. On top of that, six apartments will be dedicated to chronically homeless households, a powerful step towards ending the cycle of homelessness among veterans.

Thoughtful Amenities and Support Services

Residents won’t just have four walls around them; they will also enjoy a range of thoughtful amenities that include beautifully landscaped outdoor spaces, a multi-purpose community room for gatherings, and a secure bicycle room for those who love to ride. The vision is clear: Oak Gardens is more than just an address; it’s about creating a community where veterans can thrive.

On top of the welcoming amenities, MidPen Services will step in to provide various support systems aimed at enhancing residents’ lives. Focus areas will include economic mobility, education, health, and personalized case management. Incredibly, future residents will have direct access to a variety of VA services and programs, ensuring they have all the resources necessary right at their fingertips.

Community Connections

Location-wise, Oak Gardens couldn’t be better placed. Sitting near shopping centers, recreational spaces, and public transport options, this community will allow its residents to easily access everything they might need. Plus, if you’re looking to hit the big city, downtown San Francisco is just about 40 miles away, expanding the horizons for those living at Oak Gardens.

A Collaborative Effort

This remarkable development is made possible thanks to the VA’s Enhanced Use Lease Program, which creatively repurposes underutilized land for supportive housing. Funding comes from a rich mix of public and private sources, showcasing a wonderful spirit of collaboration. Support from the City of Menlo Park, County of San Mateo, Housing Trust Silicon Valley, and the California Department of Housing and Community Development all come together to make Oak Gardens a reality.

Continuing the Mission

With Oak Gardens on the horizon, this project marks MidPen’s sixth community development in Menlo Park. It’s an exciting leap forward, promising not just homes for veterans, but a durable community connection that will help these heroes take the next step in their journeys. With such dedicated efforts coming together, the future looks bright for those who have served our nation.
