Allie Nowak Makes Waves in Johannesburg-Lewiston Sports Scene

Johannesburg-Lewiston just got a little more exciting with the news of senior Allie Nowak making history as the first athlete from her school to sign with a Big Ten Conference university. Nowak, a star in both cross country and track and field, took a huge step in her athletic journey by committing to Michigan State University (MSU) on the much-anticipated National Signing Day on February 5.

A Bright Star Shines in Sports

Allie Nowak has been a standout since she hit the tracks and trails at Johannesburg-Lewiston High School. She’s not just participating; she’s breaking records! Her athletic prowess helped the girls’ cross country team clinch the school’s first-ever state championship in 2022, where she finished an impressive third overall with a time of 19 minutes, 20.80 seconds.

Not only that, but Nowak also soared to individual glory by becoming the state champion in the 800-meter run, clocking in at a blistering 2 minutes, 13.51 seconds. This impressive feat set a new record in Division 4, adding to her ever-growing list of accolades. She holds several school records that have made her a local legend, including:

  • 800-meter: 2:13.51
  • 400-meter: 1:00.64
  • 1600-meter: 5:05.35
  • Pole vault: 8 feet 9 inches
  • Girls’ cross country race record: 18:00.9
  • Legs in both the 4×400-meter and 4×800-meter relay records.

The Recruitment Journey

As she navigated the recruiting landscape, Nowak had her fair share of discussions with multiple schools. However, her heart was set on Michigan State after she visited only MSU and the University of Michigan. It was the strong team atmosphere and the welcoming relationships she witnessed at MSU that ultimately led her to choose the Spartans – a decision that speaks volumes about her commitment to not just individual success, but to being part of a cohesive team.

Nowak was particularly taken with the coaching staff at MSU, finding their approach to athlete development incredibly appealing. With the Spartans’ women’s cross country team recently finishing sixth at the Big Ten Championships, Allie recognizes that she’s joining not just any team, but a competitive program that boasts talented athletes and excellent coaching. This will be led by Lisa Breznau, a three-time Big Ten Cross Country Coach of the Year. Those credentials set the stage for a bright future in her athletic career.

Looking Ahead

Though she has officially signed with MSU, Nowak isn’t done yet with her high school team. She has one more exciting season left, where she aims to defend her 300-meter Division 4 state title. With her eyes on the postseason, she’s determined to lead her teammates and contribute to more victories for Johannesburg-Lewiston.

All in all, Allie Nowak is more than just an exceptional athlete; she’s an inspiring figure for her school and community. Her journey serves as a reminder of the power of hard work, dedication, and the bonds formed through athletics. As she embarks on this next chapter at Michigan State, we’re all eager to see how this local star continues to shine among the bright lights of college athletics!
