It was an inspiring day at the recent National Patients’ Convention organized by Mission Arthritis India, where the focus was on the vital role of patient support groups in navigating the complexities of arthritis management. Medical professionals, patients, and advocates gathered to discuss how support groups are evolving into key players that go well beyond their traditional roles.
Dr. Chandrasekhara S, the President of the Indian Rheumatology Association (IRA), took center stage as the Chief Guest of the event. Alongside distinguished figures like Dr. Kiran Seth, Dr. Kavita Krishna, and Mrs. Manisha Sanghavi, several other notable attendees, including Dr. Arvind Chopra, Sharayu Bhat, and Deepa Mehta, were present, making it a star-studded occasion in the field of rheumatology.
One of the major highlights of the convention was the release of an annual souvenir while over 100 patients and 15 rheumatologists actively participated in discussions regarding the latest advancements in the treatment and management of rheumatoid arthritis.
Dr. Chandrasekhara pointed out that the last 25 years have seen significant shifts in how autoimmune arthritis is treated. The current landscape boasts about 40-50 different treatment options, offering patients a variety of avenues to explore. This variety underscores the importance of ongoing research and active patient advocacy. Attendees were reminded of the need for patient advocacy groups to not only support patients emotionally but also invest in research funding and lobby for better policies around insurance coverage and access to treatments.
The atmosphere was filled with positivity, as Dr. Chandrasekhara delivered a motivational message to the patients. He stressed the significance of resilience when facing the challenges posed by arthritis. Dr. Kiran Seth later added that the journey of managing arthritis can be a source of inspiration for others and highlighted the necessity of a holistic approach, involving medication, diet, and exercise.
Moreover, Dr. Kavita Krishna brought attention to women’s increased vulnerability to autoimmune arthritis, pinpointing early diagnosis and effective weight management as crucial components in treatment.
The event also served as a platform for recognizing outstanding contributions in the field of rheumatology. The prestigious Late Shri P. C. Nahar Oration Award was awarded to Dr. Vaijayanti Lagu Joshi, a trailblazing female rheumatologist from Pune. On the other hand, the CRD Vat Viruddha Yoddha Award was presented to Shalaka Burande from Pune for her remarkable work.
Additionally, Vachasamrita S, Co-Founder of Lupus Trust India, received the Shri Haribhau Rathiji Vat Viruddha Yoddha Award, further emphasizing the importance of advocacy in arthritis management. Dr. Arvind Chopra, also a significant figure at the event, was confirmed as a member of the 2022 class of the American College of Rheumatology Masters, which is one of the highest honors in the field. His work has played a crucial role in shining a light on the burden of arthritis in India and enhancing community awareness through impactful research programs.
As the convention wrapped up, the overarching message was clear: the power of patients, the strength found in community, and the need for continuous advocacy and research are more critical than ever. With patient support groups stepping into more prominent roles, the future of Arthritis management looks promising. Participants left feeling hopeful and empowered, ready to take on the journey ahead with renewed enthusiasm and support.
