In the heart of Livonia, Michigan, an extraordinary automotive collection is now available for public viewing. Tucked away in a large building near the intersection of Plymouth and Levan roads, the Roush Automotive Collection houses approximately 115 classic cars, showcasing the rich history of motorsports and automotive engineering.

A Silver Mustang with a Legacy

Among the prominent exhibits is a unique silver Mustang named “Old Crow”. This eye-catching vehicle features a bright red spoiler and a striking yellow front bumper. “This is a car we built for EAA AirVenture Oshkosh. It’s a one-off car we designed from a clay model,” explained Dale McClenaghan, son-in-law of Jack Roush, the founder of the collection. “Dad wanted to honor Bud, who was a personal friend.”

Jack Roush, 82, is a pivotal figure in the world of NASCAR and a key player in the auto industry. He co-founded the RFK Racing team and has left a significant mark on the sport. “If these cars aren’t well cared for, they won’t last,” said Tyler Wolfe, an archivist at the collection. “This was also a way to create a venue for fans who appreciate these historic cars.” Many famous NASCAR vehicles are prominently displayed, including around 40 retired NASCAR race cars, many associated with driver Mark Martin.

A Shared Passion for Cars

Susan and Dale, who is a diesel mechanic, share a deep passion for cars that connects back to their meeting in a roller skating rink in 1979. “We would cruise Telegraph in cars,” Dale reminisced. Throughout their lives, they have owned and raced several cars, including Dale’s own race car, the 1960 Ford Falcon, which boasts a powerful engine with over 1,000 horsepower.

From Family Stories to Historical Heirlooms

The collection is rich with stories, including a dramatic account of Jack Roush’s plane crash in 2002. The wreckage of a Lockwood AirCam could be seen on display, representing a miraculous survival experience and a testament to the bonds of friendship formed during a life-threatening event.

Returning to Its Roots

One of the most significant cars in the collection is a 1969 Mustang associated with Roush’s early racing career. This car is not just a piece of history; it represents the beginning of Roush’s empire in the automotive industry. Roush famously won a Super Stock drag race at the NHRA U.S. Nationals in 1971 with this car, which ultimately led to the founding of Roush Enterprises.
