A 20-year-old man from Toledo, Ohio, Brandon Keel, is facing serious trouble after being arrested for allegedly stealing a trailer full of valuable props belonging to the Plymouth-Canton Ballet Company. Yes, you heard that right! This audacious crime went down on November 17, 2024, just outside a dance studio located on Ronda Drive in Canton Township.
The stolen trailer was a black, enclosed 24-foot unit that held special props for the ballet’s much-anticipated performance of “The Nutcracker.” Inside this trailer were treasures valued at around $1,500! Among the props were a whimsical grandfather clock, a cozy fireplace, and even an extendable Christmas tree. These items were set to bring a bit of magic to the upcoming holiday performance.
As soon as the theft was reported, the local police sprang into action. Fast forward to December 17, 2024, when Keel was actually apprehended in a joint effort by police departments from Canton Township, Plymouth Township, and Toledo, with assistance from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department. His troubles didn’t end there; in addition to the charges related to the ballet company, he is also accused of stealing a second trailer in Plymouth Township.
Brandon Keel now faces numerous felony charges, including larceny of property valued at $20,000 or more and receiving and concealing stolen property of the same value. It’s quite a hefty pile of charges! His bond has been set at $20,000 cash, and he is also required to wear a tether while out on bond. Talk about a serious wake-up call!
Following the shocking theft, the Plymouth-Canton Ballet Company launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds for new props to replace the stolen ones. Remarkably, the campaign raised nearly $19,000, highlighting the generous spirit of the community. It seems that even in tough times, people are willing to pitch in to support the arts.
Despite the unfortunate theft, the ballet company’s performances did go on as planned on December 7 and 8. Thanks to the overwhelming support from the local community and contributions from nearby studios, the show mustered enough magic to place smiles on faces. Just goes to show that even in the face of adversity, the power of community shines brightly!
As for Brandon Keel, he has a court hearing scheduled for December 27, 2024, where he will face the consequences of his actions. Meanwhile, the Plymouth-Canton Ballet Company, led by its dedicated artistic director, is grateful for the outpouring of support, making it clear that there is still hope for creativity despite setbacks.
As of now, police have not confirmed whether the original stolen trailer has been recovered. Let’s hope that this story has a happier ending. Stay tuned, as more details emerge regarding this peculiar theft and the community’s efforts to revive its ballet magic!
