Sponsor Our ArticlesNew York City is buzzing with excitement this season as Broadway welcomes the hilarious and charming play, Oh, Mary!. Written by the incredibly talented Cole Escola, the show brings to life the story of the iconic Mary Todd Lincoln as she dreams of being a cabaret star. If you’ve been on social media lately, chances are you’ve spotted vibrant posts and cheeky teasers that have likely brightened your day.
Recently, we had a delightful chat with Austin Spero, the creative force behind the play’s social media presence and the drag persona Reese Havoc. Austin’s journey into the theatrical world started at a young age, sparked by a friend’s performance in a production of Beauty and the Beast. He fondly reminisced, “That was the first time I ever saw theatre and I became obsessed.” So, it’s safe to say he’s been infatuated with the stage ever since!
After honing his skills as an actor through high school and college, Austin eventually turned his sights to social media, seamlessly merging his love for theater with the world of instant connectivity. “I enjoy the instantaneous sort of quickness that social media requires,” he shared enthusiastically.
When asked about his early days at New York City Center, Austin recalled, “I think I had been there for about a week…my first day was the first rehearsal for Into The Woods. I made a post teasing the Milky White puppet, and that did super well.” His knowledge of the theater gave him a leg up in crafting engaging content from the get-go.
So, what’s the secret behind his engaging social media strategy for Encores! shows? Austin explains that it’s a two-fold approach: branding the series while creating excitement for individual productions. Keeping everything fresh and exciting with quickly produced content adds to the unique charm of the Encores! performances, where audiences get a taste of live theater that feels fleeting yet impactful.
When it comes to his involvement with Oh, Mary!, things got rolling when Cole Escola reached out to Austin via Instagram. “Cole messaged me saying he was doing a show and asked if I wanted to do socials for it,” Austin recalled. With a history of admiration for Cole’s work, he jumped at the opportunity.
As the project began, the team kept a sense of mystique surrounding the show while emphasizing its comedic potential. “It was a very serious drama,” Austin admits, “but the play is so, so, so funny.” Their aim was to allow audiences to experience the hilarious moments without any preconceived notions, leading to unforgettable reactions.
When Broadway came calling for Oh, Mary!, Austin’s first reaction was filled with joy for Cole and the team. He noted, “I was excited that more people would get to see it really,” reflecting his unwavering support for the entire production crew who had poured their heart and soul into the show.
As the social media landscape continues to evolve, Austin finds inspiration and humor through his drag persona, Reese Havoc. “Reese has forced me to really hone my point of view and sense of humor,” he mentioned. This dynamic ability to blend personal creativity with theater has allowed him to craft engaging content that resonates with audiences today.
With the rise of Oh, Mary! and Austin’s innovative approach to social media, it’s clear that the theater community is thriving with humor and creativity. As the curtain rises on Broadway, audiences can look forward to a whirlwind of laughter, fun, and celebration of the arts.
For anyone looking to experience the hilarity of Oh, Mary!, now is the time to grab tickets and join the joyous celebration taking place on stage. Austin Spero, Reese Havoc, and the cast are all set to take you on a delightful ride through the world of cabaret dreams and historical humor, proving yet again why theater remains a vibrant part of New York City’s cultural landscape.
