SURREY, British Columbia —

Burnett Captures Pan Am Silver with US Junior Squad

University of Michigan sophomore Abby Burnett contributed to a silver-medal finish at the Junior Pan American Championships last Friday evening (July 12) at Tamanawis Park. Team USA narrowly fell 3-1 to Argentina in the gold-medal final. Argentina surged to an early 2-0 lead with a pair of goals in the first quarter before USA narrowed the deficit with a penalty-corner score midway through second. Burnett registered a defensive save on a third-quarter corner before Argentina iced the match early in the fourth with another goal off its corner attack. USA went 5-2 in the competition with both losses coming against Argentina. The Americans previously fell 3-2 in pool play.

Burnett appeared in all seven games for Team USA and contributed to a defensive effort that allowed just 1.7 goals per game and 6.1 corners per game. Argentina or USA has won the Junior Pan American Championships all but once over 11 total tournaments dating back to 1988. USA previously won in 2012 and 2023 and has taken silver five times (1988, 2000, ’05, ’16, ’24). Burnett has now earned Pan American medals in all three brands of field hockey over the last 13 months. She previously claimed gold with the USA Hockey5s squad in Jamaica in June 2023, and another with the USA indoor team in Calgary last March. At the world level, Burnett played with the USA Indoor Team at the 2023 FIH Hockey Indoor Women’s World Cup in South Africa, where she contributed to a ninth-place finish, and helped Team USA capture the Challenger Trophy at the first-ever FIH Hockey5s World Cup in Oman in May. Burnett was named Player of the Match in the Challenger Trophy match against Namibia, scoring a goal in a 2-0 USA win.

The Wolverines’ practice player, Luca Civetta, also competed with the USA men’s junior squad, which took fourth place with a 2-4-1 tournament record.
