Canton High School Grabs $145K For Mascot Makeover!

Canton High School Grabs $145K For Mascot Makeover!

Right here in Plymouth-Canton, MI, we’ve got some exciting news for you all. Canton High School is letting go of its former “Chief” mascot and arrowhead logo and opting for a fresh, new look! And guess what? They aren’t just getting a new face – they’re also getting a whopping $145,894 for this rebranding.

The Native American Heritage Fund has decided to help out. Now, if that name doesn’t say it all, I’ll let you know- this organization hands out grants to schools, colleges, and local governments to support projects for improving resources and curriculums to address Native American concerns, as well as any revise mascots and logos. So, they’re funding Canton High School’s shift from the ‘Chief’ to ‘Cobras’ in 2024.

The big wig of Plymouth-Canton Community School, Superintendent Monica Merritt, seems pretty stoked about this generous grant and the new journey the school is about to embark on. Now, you might be wondering – why lose the Chiefs? Well, the school board decided this last July, with a hefty 6-1 vote, after hearing out lots of residents and students who felt the name and logo were just not cool towards our Native American folks.

By December, with a 5-1 vote in favor, the board put a seal on the new mascot and name – the Canton Cobras! The school tried to recall this decision with a petition, but unfortunately, it didn’t get enough signatures.

So, with a slight buzz of controversy, the time for the much-awaited mascot makeover is here. So folks, let’s welcome the Canton Cobras and look forward to seeing the updates to all those uniforms, logos, and school paraphernalia!
