Canton Native Faces Severe Charges for Neighborhood Shooting

A shocking incident transpired in the peaceful neighborhood of Canton Township, Michigan, resulting in a chilling fatality and a man behind bars. A 47-year-old resident, Devereaux Christopher Johnson, is presently facing serious charges for murdering his neighbor, Nathan Morris, who was 35 years of age.

The unfortunate event took place on a typical quiet Saturday morning on the 200 blocks of Cornell Street. According to the police, the two men had a confrontation which took an ugly turn, leading to this distressing outcome.

Johnson, who has a past record of conviction for sexual assault in Nevada back in 2005, was arraigned in the afternoon at Plymouth’s 35th District Court. He made his appearance before Judge James Plakas, who heard the charges involving homicide – murder first degree – premeditated; a felony punishable by life without parole. Furthermore, he is being charged with weapons – firearms – possession by a felon, another felony with a five-year punishment, along with two counts of felony firearm.

The seriousness of the offenses leaves Johnson with no bail. Judge Plakas ordered that Johnson should be kept at the Wayne County Jail and his next court hearing is scheduled for August 23, 2024.

The court documents confirm that Johnson is on the Michigan Sex Offender Registry, providing a distressing insight into his criminal past. In addition to his current predicament, this detail casts a long and foreboding shadow over the whole situation.

This case has reverberated across the community, leaving the residents shocked and worried over their safety. The Canton Township Police Department is diligently working on this case and assuring the residents of their utmost safety.

Our thoughts are with the victim’s family in these heart-breaking times and we will bring updates on this ongoing case as they arise.
