Canton Township Announces Major Community Projects Funded by State Grants
Canton Township is set to embark on several significant projects aimed at enhancing community infrastructure and services, with a total of nearly $7 million in state grants secured for these initiatives. Among the projects highlighted is a new pedestrian bridge over Interstate 275, aimed at improving safety and accessibility for walkers and bikers in the area.
Improvements in Pedestrian Safety
The Canton Township Supervisor, Anne Marie Graham Hudak, expressed her excitement about the projects, stating, “I’m thrilled that State Rep. Ranjeev Puri and State Sen. Dayna Polehanki secured funding for these important community projects enhancing pedestrian safety, providing greater activity and programming space for seniors, and protecting abused and neglected children in Canton.”
The Palmer Road pedestrian bridge will specifically address concerns about a “treacherous path” that many Canton residents currently navigate. This route is often used by families attending activities at the Muslim Community of the Western Suburbs schools, as they make their way to the Medina Activity Center on the opposite side of the overpass. The new bridge aims to provide a safe crossing over I-275, making it easier and safer for pedestrians.
Enhancements for Seniors
Another major project is the renovation of the Summit on the Park recreational facility. The township has been awarded $2.5 million to transform approximately 10,600 square feet within the Summit. This renovation will expand the space available for Club 55+, Canton’s senior program, which currently operates in about 1,500 square feet.
The improvements will provide seniors with an expanded area for various activities, including billiards, shuffleboard, exercise classes, card games, and cooking classes. The newly enhanced facilities aim to create a welcoming environment for the seniors of Canton, encouraging community engagement and active living.
Supporting Vulnerable Children
Additionally, $1 million has been allocated for the renovation of the historic Sheldon School building. This funding is part of a plan to establish a Kids-TALK Children’s Advocacy Center in Canton, which will focus on the welfare and safety of children in Western Wayne County.
The center is designed to support abused and neglected children, providing them with a safe space to be interviewed and seek help. Reviving the Sheldon School for this purpose emphasizes its original mission of serving children and families, while also ensuring that support services are conveniently located for those in need.
