Canton Township Awarded $7 Million in State Grants for Community Development Projects

Canton Township Receives $7 Million for Major Projects

Canton Township, MI — On Tuesday, local officials revealed that the township has been awarded nearly $7 million in state grants aimed at funding significant community projects. This funding comes at a crucial time and will support the construction of a new pedestrian bridge, renovations at local facilities, and enhanced services for vulnerable children in the area.

Details of the Funding

The funding will be allocated to three main projects:

  • Pedestrian Bridge: $3.25 million will be used to build a pedestrian bridge on Palmer Road over Interstate 275.
  • Summit Renovation Project: $2.5 million will go towards renovating space at the Summit on the Park.
  • Sheldon School Renovation: $1 million will be spent to convert part of the Sheldon School into a facility dedicated to kids’ welfare.

Improving Walkability with a New Bridge

One of the most anticipated projects is the pedestrian bridge, which will definitely enhance safety for many residents. Currently, locals must navigate a “treacherous path” along Palmer Road to reach various community facilities, including the Medina Activity Center (MAC). This bridge is expected to offer a safer and more welcoming route for pedestrians and cyclists.

Canton Township Supervisor, Anne Marie Graham Hudak, emphasized that the new pedestrian bridge is essential for many locals who travel along that route. “This will drastically improve access for our residents,” Hudak stated. “Hundreds use this path weekly, and safety is our priority.”

Expanding Senior Programs

Another exciting development is at the Summit on the Park. The township plans to spend $2.5 million on a renovation that will double the space available for the Club 55+ program, which caters to members of the senior community. Currently, the program operates in around 1,500 square feet, but after renovations, it will expand to around 10,600 square feet.

This expansion will offer seniors a variety of activities such as billiards, shuffleboard, and cooking classes. These enhancements will allow seniors a vibrant, engaging place to meet others and participate in enriching programs.

Supporting Vulnerable Children

The final major project funded by the state is the renovation of part of the Sheldon School for Kids-TALK, a child welfare program that operates across Western Wayne County. The project will allocate $1 million to create a safe space for children who are victims of abuse or neglect.

This new facility aims to provide social, emotional, and healing support to affected children and their families, allowing for interviews to take place in a safe and comforting environment. It will be conveniently located for families in the surrounding areas, making it accessible for those in need.

Community Response

The local community has expressed enthusiasm and gratitude for the funding. Residents see these projects as an opportunity to greatly improve their quality of life while enhancing safety and accessibility. Local representatives, including State Rep. Ranjeev Puri and State Sen. Dayna Polehanki, played pivotal roles in securing this funding and have been applauded for their leadership.

Looking Ahead

With this infusion of state funds, Canton Township is poised for significant improvements that will benefit its residents for years to come. The township will continue to focus on projects aimed at enhancing community connectivity, supporting senior citizens, and safeguarding vulnerable populations.

Canton Township leaders and residents alike are excited about the upcoming renovations and constructions, as they envision a safer, more vibrant community where people of all ages can thrive.
