Canton Township Receives $7 Million in State Grants for Major Projects
Canton Township is set to make significant improvements as it has been awarded nearly $7 million in state funding for three major projects. The announcement was made by township officials who expressed their excitement about the benefits these projects will bring to the community.
Key Projects Funded by the Grants
The funds will primarily be directed towards three main initiatives: the construction of a pedestrian bridge over Interstate 275 at Palmer Road, a renovation project at the Summit on the Park for senior activities, and the conversion of a part of the Sheldon School into a facility for Kids-TALK, a child welfare program.
Construction of the Pedestrian Bridge
About $3.25 million of the funding will be allocated for the pedestrian bridge project. This bridge aims to provide a safer and more welcoming route for pedestrians and cyclists crossing over I-275. Currently, residents, including many from the Muslim Community of the Western Suburbs, face challenges while navigating a “treacherous path” along Palmer Road to access community centers and services, such as the Medina Activity Center located to the west of the overpass.
Renovations at Summit on the Park
The renovation project at the Summit on the Park will receive $2.5 million. This project will revamp roughly 10,600 square feet of space to significantly enhance the Club 55+ program, which serves seniors in Canton. Currently, Club 55+ is confined to just 1,500 square feet, but with the additional space, seniors can enjoy a variety of activities such as billiards, shuffleboard, exercise classes, and cooking workshops.
Transformation of Sheldon School
Additionally, $1 million will go towards converting part of the Sheldon School into a functional space for Kids-TALK, which is focused on the welfare of children. This center will provide essential support and resources for abused and neglected children, ensuring they have a safe place to receive assistance. The location is convenient for families in western Wayne County and is close to Canton’s new Youth Center, which will soon house Growth Works, Inc.
Community and Official Support
Canton Township Supervisor Anne Marie Graham Hudak noted the challenges residents currently face, especially in reaching essential services. She highlighted the importance of the pedestrian bridge in creating a safe route for numerous residents who traverse this area weekly. The township received strong backing from local officials, including State Rep. Ranjeev Puri and State Sen. Dayna Polehanki, who played vital roles in securing the state funds.
