Canton Township Secures Nearly $7 Million in State Funding for Pedestrian Bridge and Community Renovations

Canton Township Announces Major Developments Including a Pedestrian Bridge

CANTON TWP. — Canton Township is set to embark on several significant projects that will enhance local infrastructure, community spaces, and safety for residents. A key highlight of these plans is the construction of a pedestrian bridge over Interstate 275, which aims to make the area safer for walkers and cyclists.

State Funding for Community Projects

On Wednesday, local officials revealed that the township will receive close to nearly $7 million in state grants to help fund these initiatives. Canton Township Supervisor Anne Marie Graham Hudak expressed her excitement about this funding and highlighted its importance to the community. “I’m thrilled that State Rep. Ranjeev Puri and State Sen. Dayna Polehanki secured funding for these important community projects enhancing pedestrian safety, providing greater activity and programming space for seniors, and protecting abused and neglected children in Canton,” Hudak stated.

Details of the Projects

Here’s a closer look at what the funding will cover:

  • A New Pedestrian Bridge: A budget of $3.25 million has been allocated for the construction of a pedestrian bridge at Palmer Road over I-275. This bridge aims to improve safety for the hundreds of residents who frequently cross this busy road. Many individuals, including those attending local schools and community events at the Medina Activity Center, currently face a “treacherous path” on Palmer Road, making this bridge a much-needed solution.
  • Renovation of the Summit on the Park: Another part of the investment is a $2.5 million renovation project to expand the activity space at Summit on the Park. This area is home to Club 55+, which is Canton’s program aimed at seniors. Currently operating in just 1,500 square feet, the renovations will allow for a significant expansion of nearly 10,600 square feet. This will offer seniors more options for activities like billiards, shuffleboard, exercise classes, and cooking lessons, making it a vibrant community hub.
  • Revamping the Sheldon School: The final component of the funding includes $1 million designated for renaming and renovating the historic Sheldon School. This facility will house the Kids-TALK Children’s Advocacy Center, a vital program serving abused and neglected children across Western Wayne County. By transforming this school, it will regain its original purpose of serving children and families in the community.

Community Impact

According to township officials, these projects will create a safer environment, enhance community engagement, and provide critical resources for vulnerable demographics—particularly children. The pedestrian bridge over I-275 is expected to significantly reduce hazards for pedestrians, while the expanded senior center will give older adults a welcoming space to connect and participate in various programs.

The renovation of the Sheldon School to accommodate Kids-TALK is particularly noteworthy. This center will not only be convenient for families in the area, but it will also work closely with the nearby Youth Center that will host Growth Works, Inc. in the near future.

Looking Forward

Canton Township’s decision to invest in these important community projects is poised to create lasting positive changes for its residents. With enhanced safety, improved community spaces, and better support for children and families, Canton is taking significant steps toward a brighter future for all its citizens.

For further information or inquiries, residents can reach out to local officials or keep an eye on announcements as these projects progress.
