In a shocking accident in Westland this past weekend, a woman stands accused of intentionally crashing into cars and pedestrians, resulting in serious injuries for a young couple. Towering 13 felony charges have been lodged against the woman, including attempted murder.
April Marie Graves, a 43-year-old resident of Westland, is alleged to have targeted several vehicles in her intoxicated high-speed drive down Wildwood Street, causing grievous harm to a 32-year-old man in particular. The Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office has reported that during the incident, Graves’s car smashed into two victims who were only loading some stuff into their vehicle at the time, forcefully wedging the male victim between two vehicles.
The local Westland Fire Department reached the scene to rescue the male victim and rush him to the nearest hospital.
The victims have been identified as Luke and Hailey Vinsko by a GoFundMe page, a young couple who were returning from their first date since having twin boys barely two months ago. The page details the severity of Luke’s injuries due to the impact, stating one of his legs had to be amputated on an emergency basis, and the toes on his other leg were broken.
The charges against Graves include, among others, two counts of attempted murder, two charges related to causing significant physical harm with intent, driving recklessly causing serious bodily damage, and operating while under the influence leading to serious physical impairment. She has also been charged with two counts of assault using a deadly weapon, a count of assault/resist/obstruct of a police officer, and a case for having alcohol open in a vehicle.
Graves was presented in front of Judge Sandra Cicirelli in the 18th District Court and was slapped with a bond or surety of $850,000. She is due to attend a probable cause conference on Aug. 22, followed by a preliminary hearing on Aug. 29.
