Celebrating Women in Marketing: A Festive Luncheon in New York City

This past week, the vibrant city of New York was buzzing with energy as marketing professionals from all corners of the nation gathered to honor outstanding women in the field. The stunning backdrop of the Hudson River set the stage for Ragan’s Top Women in Marketing Awards 2024 Luncheon, held at the charming City Winery in Manhattan. This event was a heartwarming celebration of the accomplishments, innovations, and community spirit that these remarkable leaders embody.

A Moving Introduction

The event kicked off with a warm welcome from Mary C. Buhay, the chief growth officer and head of councils at Ragan. Drawing inspiration from the iconic Statue of Liberty, Buhay encouraged attendees to reflect on their journey. “We stand on her shoulders, and we stand on the shoulders of our ancestors, our allies here in the room, and all of our loved ones,” she said. This powerful statement set a thoughtful tone, reminding everyone that their success is often built upon the support and inspiration of others.

Honorees Share Their Wisdom

As the ceremony progressed, honorees took the stage to share their thoughts and experiences. Each one had a unique story to tell, serving as both inspiration and a reminder of the collective strength of women in marketing. Geri Berdak, CEO of The Dairy Alliance, shared sage advice she’d give her younger self about perseverance. “Don’t give up on your passions,” she urged the audience. “I had a passion for food and nutrition growing up, and a lot of people told me that I’d never be able to make a career out of it. But I did just that!” Her message resonated with many, emphasizing the importance of chasing your dreams despite the naysayers.

Elizabeth Paffenbarger, Senior Vice President of Strategy at Klick Health, conveyed a powerful sentiment about leadership, saying that her autobiography would be titled “Lead Through Grace.” “One of the most key parts of being gracious is being gracious to yourself,” she reflected. Her insight into the balance between being a compassionate leader and maintaining self-kindness sparked nods of agreement throughout the room.

Making a Difference

Another key moment of the day came from Jodi Patkin, Chief Marketing & Communications Officer at the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Patkin redefined the concept of wearing pink ribbons during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, calling it a “lifesaving marketing campaign.” She emphasized, “Awareness enough is not alone. We must work with the best and brightest minds to advance lifesaving research and rid the world of breast cancer.” Her call to action for collaboration and innovation left attendees feeling invigorated.

Empowering the Next Generation

Reflecting on personal challenges and growth, Kristen Potter, Digital Marketing Director at John Guilfoil Public Relations, shared her thoughts about empowering the younger generation. As a mother, she expressed her hopes for her daughter, saying, “I try to tell her to be sure people hear her voice. Don’t be afraid to be heard, be confident in what you say, and don’t ever hold back.” Her message was a poignant reminder of the power of confidence and self-expression.

A Note of Gratitude

The event was not just about awards; it was a celebration of the community, resilience, and support among women in marketing. As conversations flowed and connections were formed, it was clear that the stories shared were not only personal but also collective — a testament to the unyielding spirit of women who are breaking barriers and paving the way for future generations.

As the luncheon concluded, attendees left with renewed energy and purpose, ready to take on new challenges in their careers. The event beautifully captured the essence of collaboration and empowerment, a fitting tribute to the incredible women leading the marketing industry today.
