The news of Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s endorsement of Donald Trump for presidency post bowing out of the White House race has led to an extensive backlash against his wife, ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’ star Cheryl Hines, on social media platforms.
Hines’ attempt to express gratitude to those who worked tirelessly on Kennedy’s independent campaign, irrespective of their political affiliations, was met with heated responses from the online community. Many social media users criticized the actress for her assumed support of RFK Jr.’s decision to back Trump. This criticism has been particularly sharp given that Hines has previously expressed her disdain for Trump’s political ideology.
Defending her husband’s decision, Hines stated, “I deeply respect the decision Bobby made to run on the principle of unity”. She spoke of the extraordinary people she encountered from different political parties throughout her husband’s campaign and acknowledged their shared desire for a better America.
However, this positivity was met with blunt criticisms, as users did not hold back in expressing their disappointment in Hines for silently supporting her husband’s unexpected pivot towards Trump.
Amid a wave of criticism, Twitter user Tim Fullerton made his stance clear with his tweet: “I never pegged you as a Trump supporter but here we are. Your legacy is on the line. If you don’t say anything, you will be remembered for supporting Trump.”
Another user, A.J. Delgado, showed her disapproval by sarcastically asking whether Hines had acquired a “Make America Great Again” (MAGA) hat yet.
There was also a slew of comments targeting RFK Jr.’s mental health, with some users arguing that Kennedy’s decision to back Trump reflects a negligent disregard for the future of the nation.
Some social media users also took umbrage at the controversial statements and actions that RFK Jr. took in the past. For instance, his anti-vaccine stances and his questionable claim that the COVID-19 virus was a bio-weapon “ethnically targeted” to spare a specific ethnic group.
Despite receiving a heap of criticism, Hines has attempted to distance herself from her husband’s more controversial opinions. In response to RFK Jr.’s insensitive comparison of Jews’ freedom during the Holocaust to the freedom of unvaccinated Americans during the pandemic, she tweeted a clear condemnation. However, the tweet was later removed.
In an interview with the Hollywood Reporter earlier this year, Hines described Trump’s rhetoric as “ridiculous and disrespectful” during his 2016 presidential campaign. Speaking on her disagreements with her husband’s political views, she affirmed that they manage their differences by having open conversations.
While Hines’ future continues to hang in the balance amidst these social media controversies, Kennedy’s political future is now tied to the reemergence of Trump’s political machine. With rumors of a possible cabinet position for Kennedy in Trump’s administration, the pair might face further struggles in the time ahead.
