Colonel James William Forsythe: A Life of Service and Healing

It is with a heavy heart that we share the passing of Colonel James William Forsythe, M.D., H.M.D., a cherished physician and an esteemed pioneer in the field of integrative oncology. Dr. Forsythe departed this world peacefully at the age of 86 on January 29, 2025, surrounded by the love of his devoted wife, Earlene. His remarkable journey and caring spirit truly made a difference to those he touched.

From Humble Beginnings to Medical Pioneer

Born in Detroit, Michigan, Forsythe’s early life took him to sunny Hollywood, California, where he and his mother, Ruth, worked hard to find better opportunities. It was his mother’s determination that fueled his ambition to excel academically. Forsythe was a natural talent in the sciences and actively participated in clubs like chess and physics, showcasing his knack for critical thinking.

Supported by a strong work ethic, Forsythe persevered to fund his college education and earned a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry and Physiology from the University of California, Berkeley. He then pursued his passion for medicine and attended the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) School of Medicine, where he received his Doctor of Medicine in 1964.

A Path of Service in the Military

To support his medical education, Forsythe took a step that would shape his future by enlisting in the U.S. Army Medical Corps. His commitment to serve led him to a tour in Vietnam during a memorable military career that spanned an impressive 26 years. Forsythe achieved the rank of Full Colonel and later served as State Surgeon for the Nevada Army National Guard.

A Journey Through Medicine

Forsythe’s extensive medical qualifications are a testament to his dedication. He became board-certified in Internal Medicine, Medical Oncology, and Utilization Review and Quality Assurance, while also being board-eligible in other areas of expertise. Completing residencies in Pathology at Tripler Army General Hospital in Hawaii and Internal Medicine at Children’s Hospital in San Francisco, Forsythe made strides in his oncology and hematology fellowship at UCSF and San Francisco General Hospital. His passion didn’t stop there, as he became a certified homeopathic physician and part of the leading edge in integrative oncology practices.

Creating a Legacy in Cancer Care

For nearly 60 years, Forsythe practiced medicine in Northern Nevada, where he founded several important centers, including the Cancer Screening and Treatment Center of Nevada, the Forsythe Cancer Care Center, and the Century Wellness Clinic. Forsythe’s integrative approach combined conventional treatments with homeopathic and alternative therapies, helping countless patients navigate their difficult journeys through cancer.

Throughout his career, Forsythe wrote 17 books focused on cancer treatment, patient advocacy, and understanding the healthcare system. He also hosted the popular radio show “Health Matters”, a platform dedicated to educating the public on health and wellness.

A Family Man and a Man of Faith

Beyond his professional achievements, Forsythe was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Family gatherings were a cherished tradition, often filled with laughter, tennis matches, and quality time spent with loved ones. Known for his kindness, humor, and his unwavering love for his wife and family, Forsythe’s spirit and values will live on in those he touched.

A man of faith, he lived according to Christian principles and instilled those values in his children. His legacy of service, integrity, and dedication to healing will resonate for generations to come.
