Anew gardening space dedicated for local disabled veterans
A newly launched gardening space at Greenmead Historical Park in Livonia is promising to act as a refuge for local disabled veterans. The project, sponsored by Michigan Operation Freedom Outdoors — a nonprofit organization focused on offering nature-centric experiences and connections for veterans, has committed to support a garden plot in Greenmead’s community garden for the forthcoming years.
Making the dream a reality for veterans
“We hope our vets can really benefit from this and use it,” stated Navy veteran associated with Livonia Veterans Connection. “This was a dream, and we made it happen.” In collaboration with community partners, Rotondo Construction donated paving and Highpost Home Improvements provided 14 raised garden boxes. These facilities, free for any disabled veterans who wish to delve into gardening, create a mobility-friendly environment for those with physical disabilities.
A place of peace and camaraderie for disabled veterans
Army veteran and president of Michigan Operation Freedom Outdoors mentioned his personal connection with outdoor activities, describing them as a “saving grace” upon his return from service in Iraq. Echoing this sentiment, advocates of the project are hopeful that the free garden space will become a sanctuary for other veterans to find tranquility and form new friendships.
“I was in the initial invasion into Iraq and then we went out again the year after. War is war, that’s why I ran to the outdoors when I came back: it was my refuge. It’s simple — this can undoubtedly mean a lot to someone,” the Army veteran expounded.
Council endorses project
During the grand opening for the plot on July 11, a local councilwoman praised the project, calling it “inspiring”.
“This is a terrific example of a resident who had an idea and strived to make it a reality,” she expressed, “It’s very inspirational. I want people to see that this is proof that you can transform your idea into reality.”
