Ann Arbor is buzzing with excitement as a brand new culinary hotspot is set to make its grand debut on Thursday, February 6, 2025. Echelon Kitchen & Bar, located right at 200 S. Main Street in the heart of downtown, is gearing up to offer a dining experience like no other!
The restaurant will be taking over a captivating 7,000-square-foot building, rich with history and charm, that has stood for over 100 years. This iconic space was home to bd’s Mongolian Grill, which delighted diners for an impressive 28 years before it closed its doors in 2022. With its architectural character and prime location, Echelon Kitchen & Bar is poised to create a charming ambiance that complements its delicious offerings.
At the helm of this exciting new venture is Executive Chef Joseph VanWagner, who has been busy crafting a menu that celebrates the bountiful produce of Michigan. Think wood-fired dishes that change with the seasons, ensuring that diners enjoy the freshest ingredients year-round. The initial offerings are sure to entice, starting with a delightful salad featuring shaved winter vegetables drizzled with chive oil and topped with horseradish crème fraîche.
But that’s just the beginning! Food lovers can also expect a scrumptious wood-fired flatbread adorned with roasted beets, creamy taleggio and goat cheese, and a zesty pistachio butter. Echelon Kitchen & Bar aims to shine a spotlight on vegetable-forward dishes, while still providing guests with plenty of seafood and meat options.
Highlighting the menu are some truly standout dishes that promise to tantalize taste buds. Imagine savoring handmade bucatini pasta tossed with buttery lobster, butternut squash, and a touch of preserved oranges, all balanced with just the right amount of chili. If you’re in the mood for something hearty, the dry-aged duck breast will surely steal the show. And for those looking to share, Echelon also offers large, family-style dishes, including a whole roasted turbot or a whole roasted chicken served in four delectable ways!
For those looking for something truly special, the restaurant will feature a Chef’s Counter experience offering a six-course meal that’s exclusive to the counter setting, priced at $110. Guests can opt for an optional beverage pairing to enhance their culinary journey. Speaking of drinks, prepare your palates for a fantastic selection of craft cocktails, local beers, ciders, and wines, with a focus on Michigan-made products.
As if the main menu isn’t enticing enough, save room for desserts crafted by Pastry Chef Ben Robison. Each sweet treat will showcase local ingredients, including a luscious dark chocolate ganache and a refreshing grapefruit panna cotta served alongside olive oil cake—a perfect way to wrap up a meal!
Echelon Kitchen & Bar isn’t just about great food; it also aims to make a positive impact in the community. The restaurant is dedicated to community engagement and provides mentorship opportunities to local schools, ongoing staff workshops, and even a culinary library for team members. Plus, there’s a “Well Being Fund” established for non-tipped workers, paying it forward while ensuring every staff member can thrive.
Dinner service will be available from Thursday through Monday, and eager diners can make reservations in advance through the Tock platform. Make sure to stay informed by connecting with Echelon Kitchen & Bar via their website for more details!
