The U.S. is currently facing a significant challenge: the ongoing bird flu outbreak is causing egg prices to rise dramatically. This avian crisis, officially known as Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI), has not only impacted chicken farms but has transformed the way consumers shop for groceries.
As of January 2025, the average price for a dozen Grade A eggs hit a shocking $4.95! This figure represents more than double the prices from just a year and a half earlier, when a dozen eggs could be found for as low as $2.04 in August 2023. When it comes to inflation, this price jump of 65% since January 2024 is causing quite a stir among shoppers.
It’s not just a minor bump in prices, either. In some regions, consumers are reporting prices soaring to a staggering $10 or more for a carton of eggs! This surge is putting a serious strain on many family budgets, particularly as grocery store staples become harder to stockpile.
The serious impact on eggs stems from the massive culling of chickens aimed at controlling the spread of the bird flu. Over the final quarter of 2024 alone, more than 20 million egg-laying hens were culled. This drastic measure was propelled by the need to contain the outbreak and has led to a swift reduction in the overall chicken population.
Egg prices have not seen such an upheaval since the last major bird flu outbreak in 2015— a time when panic and price increases were similarly severe. In fact, the record price from January 2025 surpassed the previous all-time high of $4.82 noted back in 2015, reflecting just how significant this crisis has become.
As a noteworthy point, prices of eggs now account for approximately two-thirds of the overall increase in food prices recently. Empty shelves and a limit on the number of cartons consumers can purchase have almost become the norm at grocery stores across the nation.
It’s not just home cooks feeling the pinch. Restaurants, including beloved chains like Waffle House, are also feeling the pressure. Many establishments have begun adding surcharges on egg dishes simply to keep up with rising costs. This has led to price increases of anywhere from 30 to 50 cents per egg or egg dish— a new reality for many diners.
People are starting to change their eating habits as well. Reports have emerged indicating a significant decline in egg usage as families try to adapt to the new pricing landscape. And it seems that desperation has led to some strange occurrences, including alarming reports of egg thefts, where a distribution trailer was robbed of 100,000 organic eggs worth $40,000 in Pennsylvania!
So, what does the future hold for egg prices? Experts suggest it may take months for the supply of egg-laying chickens to stabilize. Meanwhile, states such as New York and Georgia are taking active steps to contain the situation, which includes temporarily closing live bird markets.
