Bush Institute for Women’s Health, emphasized patient advocacy and featured inspiring speakers, including survivor Julia Pierce. Additionally, the city council has approved a $1.4 million investment for a new women’s health clinic aimed at improving access to essential healthcare services in the Texas Panhandle.
What a fantastic turnout! Recently, Amarillo National Bank played host to a vibrant “Lunch and Learn” event, attracting more than 150 enthusiastic participants eager to dive into the world of women’s health. This inspiring event, organized by the Laura W. Bush Institute for Women’s Health, focused on the vital theme of patient advocacy within the realm of healthcare for women.
The speakers at this engaging session struck a chord by emphasizing how essential it is for women to trust their own health experiences and be vocal advocates for their medical needs. One central figure at the event, Dr. Joanna Wilson, an internal medicine expert and the founder of the Her Care clinic, took the stage to enlighten everyone on the importance of being proactive in one’s health journey.
Historically, there has been a trend where women’s voices in the medical field were somewhat overlooked. However, a beautiful transformation is taking place in medicine, where patients are now embraced as coordinated team members, rather than just passive recipients of treatment.
Dr. Wilson noted that with a rising number of female physicians, the landscape of patient care is experiencing positive change. Women are being encouraged to be self-advocates, trusting their instincts and researching their health options extensively.
Julia Pierce, a patient advocate, shared the gripping details of her experience surviving a heart attack while pregnant. Her inspiring story highlighted the significance of advocacy skills, underscoring the importance of speaking up about personal health challenges. Such testimonies were truly motivational and left attendees feeling empowered to take control of their own health journeys.
Angela Knapp Eggers, the senior director at the institute, emphasized that events like these are designed to empower women. The Lunch and Learn sessions, held three times a year, consistently draw in around 150 participants, covering a variety of topics that span emotional, physical, and nutritional health.
Mark your calendars because the next Lunch and Learn is set for November 15th! It will focus on valuable health tips tailored for the holiday season, ensuring women stay healthy even during the bustling festivities.
In a bid to bolster women’s health services even further, the city council approved a significant investment of $1.4 million to launch a new women’s health clinic. This promising facility will be conveniently located at 850 Martin Road and is expected to open its doors around mid-2025. It’s a vital initiative aimed at improving access to health services for women across the Texas Panhandle.
Currently, only about five counties in this region provide full access to maternal care. This new clinic is set to address critical health needs by offering services such as mammogram referrals, screenings for HIV and cervical cancer, contraception, domestic violence counseling, and pregnancy testing. Additionally, it will also cater to pre-prenatal care, including STD testing, drug screenings, and mental health support.
To cater to underserved women in the community, the clinic will also provide essential hygiene items, cribs, car seats, and transportation assistance. This is particularly crucial as a staggering 64% of women report struggling to afford menstrual hygiene products, a significant barrier to health and wellness.
Measures ensuring child safety will be prioritized to prevent tragedies among children, showcasing the clinic’s commitment to comprehensive care. The project has previously garnered $1 million in funding, needing an additional $398,000 to meet its total budget of about $1.39 million.
The council members have voiced their resounding support for the clinic, recognizing its potential to make a tangible difference in community health. The initiative aligns beautifully with the city’s health priorities, spearheading efforts to create a healthier future for women and their families.
With a total of six exam rooms slated for this new clinic, health services in the area are set to improve significantly, promising an engaging and supportive environment for the patients that will walk through its doors by early to mid-2025.
As the community rallies around these impactful initiatives, there’s no doubt that the future looks bright for women’s health!
