Farmington and Farmington Hills Voters Approve Key Tax Proposals for Education, Libraries, and Infrastructure

Farmington and Farmington Hills Voters Show Strong Support for Tax Proposals!

Hey there, folks! Big news coming out of Farmington and Farmington Hills as local voters flocked to the polls, with a resounding voice for several important tax proposals. It’s safe to say that the community is standing tall for education, libraries, and road maintenance! So, let’s dive into the results and see what the community members have decided!

Farmington Public School District Millage Renewal

In the Farmington Public School District, nearly 97% of precincts have reported, and it looks like 65% of voters have given a giant thumbs-up to the operating millage renewal for schools! What does this mean? Well, the proposal will cap the maximum allowable levy on commercial and rental properties at 18 mills and maintain 12.59 mills on principal residences. This funding will be effective for the next 10 years, stretching from 2026 to 2035, helping to cover those essential operating expenses for our schools. Guess what? This plan is expected to bring in $49.2 million in its first year alone. Talk about a boost for our kiddos’ education!

Support for the Farmington Community Library

Not stopping there, the community also showed its love for the Farmington Community Library, with over 72% of voters supporting the renewal of the library millage at a rate not to exceed 0.92 mills against all taxable property. This renewal will last for a whopping 20 years, from 2025 to 2044! It’s anticipated that this levy will net about $4.75 million in the first year. How fantastic is that? Our library is in for a treat, and everyone knows how important libraries are in fostering a love for reading and learning!

Farmington Hills Road Maintenance Tax Approval

Over in Farmington Hills, the voters also made a clear statement! With 66% of the votes in favor, the city’s charter will now be amended to allow for a renewal of the previously approved additional special tax rate. This will help improve and maintain our roads and drainage systems. The vote allows the city to levy 2 mills for the next 10 years, kicking off in July of next year. Expect around $9 million in the first year! It’s all about keeping our roads in shape and ensuring that we travel safely in our beloved city!

Changes to City Council and Mayor’s Term

And there’s more! Residents also voted overwhelmingly, with an impressive 83% yes vote, to amend the charter so that City Council members and the mayor will serve until their successor is officially sworn in or until they are re-sworn in after re-election. A smooth transition for our local leaders is just what the community ordered!

What’s Next?

Clearly, the voters of Farmington and Farmington Hills are looking forward to a bright future, ready to invest in their schools, library, and infrastructure.
