WAYNE COUNTY, Mich. – In a heartwarming twist on the typical parent-child relationship, Damon Barber Sr. and Damon Barber Jr. are not just navigating family life together, but also embarking on an exciting new journey at the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office Jailers’ Training Academy. They are making history as the first father and son duo to participate in the program simultaneously in Wayne County.
The unique partnership started when Damon Jr., 22, approached his dad with a desire to join the academy. To his surprise, Damon Sr., 51, was thrilled by the idea. “He was on board for sure,” Damon Jr. recounted with enthusiasm. “I thought he was going to give me like a little bit of a side-eye and be like ‘you sure you want to do this?’” But instead, Damon Sr. decided to leave behind his career in corporate America to join his son on this adventurous path. “I said, you know what, ‘This may not be bad, let me throw my hat in there as well and try it out,’ and here we are,” Damon Sr. explained.
As they dive deeper into their training, their relationship takes an interesting turn. In the classroom, they switch between being father and son to being fellow recruits. “Sometimes, it clicks for me to say ‘Dad,’ but then I say Damon Sr,” said Damon Jr. with a laugh. “So, it kind of throws me off. And then, if we’re ever in the car together, so you call me Damon. I’m like I can’t keep calling you Dad.” It can be quite a fun challenge for both of them as they navigate this new dynamic!
Currently, they are just two weeks into their seven-week training program, and it’s clear the experience is not just about gaining new skills but also about bonding. Damon Sr. reflected on how this unique situation is a great example for anyone considering a career with the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office. “My son and myself being here is a great example to anyone who’s interested in joining the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office that hey, you can come young, you can come old,” he noted proudly.
Damon Jr. expressed immense pride in his father’s decision to join him in training. “It kind of fills me up with joy because I always wanted to spend time with him more and more,” he shared, showcasing the deep bond they have developed throughout this experience.
The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office is always on the lookout for new recruits and welcomes individuals from all walks of life. In a world where family dynamics can often get complicated, the Barbers are setting a unique and inspiring example of togetherness, ambition, and support.
Their story not only highlights the extraordinary commitment between a father and son but also emphasizes the value of pursuing one’s passions at any age. As they continue their training, there’s no doubt that this duo will make plenty of memories together in Wayne County.
