DETROIT – Traffic was brought to a standstill on north I-275 near Plymouth on Wednesday, October 23, 2024, due to a serious crash that resulted in a fuel spill. The incident happened just after 4:15 p.m., and traffic was severely affected, especially as the evening rush hour began.
According to reports from local law enforcement, the crash involved multiple vehicles. It was found that traffic on the right lane of northbound I-275 had come to a halt when a 71-year-old man from Howell, who was behind the wheel of a semi-truck, wasn’t able to stop in time. Unfortunately, he rear-ended another semi-truck, which caused a chain reaction. This second semi was propelled into a passenger car that was subsequently pushed into a van. Another semi attempted to swerve to avoid the collision but ended up sideswiping the second truck.
Due to the nature of the accident, both the at-fault driver and the driver of the passenger car sustained injuries and were promptly transported to a nearby hospital for medical attention. Fortunately, the van’s occupants did not report any injuries. However, the delay created by this situation has left many commuters frustrated and scrambling for alternatives.
Northbound I-275 is currently closed at Ford Road, and traffic is backed up for miles. Additionally, Hines Drive directly under the overpass was also closed due to the fuel spill, making it even more challenging for drivers in the area. Motorists are being encouraged to look for alternate routes, as authorities expect significant delays, particularly as the rush hour gets into full swing.
F/Lt Mike Shaw from the local troopers emphasized the importance of maintaining safe driving habits during such scenarios. “It is key to leave enough following distance between your vehicle and the vehicle in front of you,” he stated. “It is the driver’s responsibility to make sure they can stay in control of their vehicle and stop safely.” This serves as a crucial reminder for everyone on the road, especially in busy traffic situations.
The investigation into this serious crash is still ongoing. Troopers are working diligently to piece together all the elements of what happened and why. Motorists are urged to stay informed about updates as the situation develops, and it’s always a good idea to keep an eye on traffic reports before heading out.
As rush hour continues, it is essential to be patient and adaptable. If you’re planning to drive in that area, consider using apps that can provide real-time traffic updates or try to get to your destination a little earlier, just to avoid the rush altogether.
We’ll keep you posted on any developments regarding the accident and the reopening of the affected highways. For now, if you’re heading home from work or out for errands, please drive cautiously and follow the guidance of traffic authorities. Stay safe!
