Farmington Unveils Plans for Major Renovations at Governor Warner Mansion Grounds

Farmington Plans Major Changes to Governor Warner Mansion Grounds

Farmington is set to witness some exciting developments at the historic Governor Warner Mansion as city officials unveil plans for significant improvements. Over the next few years, the grounds of the mansion are expected to transform into a vibrant event space, enhancing both its aesthetic appeal and functional capacity.

Vision for Expansion

The city’s plan involves adopting a comprehensive master plan that aims to upgrade the mansion’s surroundings, led by City Council member and architect Steven Schneemann. One of the standout features of this project is a proposal for a new outdoor structure that Schneemann describes as a “permanent tent.” This structure is projected to be around 3,000 square feet and would include heating and air conditioning, a warming kitchen, and ADA-compliant restrooms. The space is designed to accommodate up to 260 guests, making it ideal for various gatherings.

Schneemann emphasizes the need for more event-friendly facilities, noting that while the mansion is beautiful, it does not support large gatherings effectively. He hopes to create a “big party space” that integrates both the mansion and the existing barn on the grounds, which would also be renovated for smaller events.

Project Phases and Timeline

The project will be executed in multiple phases; Schneemann estimates there will be seven phases, although this number could change. The estimated timeline for completion stretches from three to five years, with costs ranging between $3.5 million and $4 million. Excitingly, the first phase could kick off next spring, focusing on addressing the mansion’s pressing structural issues.

Restoration and Community Integration

Farmington Mayor Pro Tem Johnna Balk highlighted the mansion’s current status, noting that it is temporarily closed to the public due to necessary repairs. She indicated that renovating the mansion would likely be the first step in the project, reinforcing the structure’s importance in the community’s history. The city recognizes the historical significance of the Governor Warner Mansion and aims to preserve its integrity while implementing modern improvements.

Outdoor Spaces and Accessibility

The proposed outdoor structure will not only enhance the space between the mansion and barn but will also feature an outdoor area for games. This comprehensive planning considers expanding parking to better support the anticipated influx of events. The city recently demolished an old church nearby, freeing up land for additional parking, which will be a valuable asset during events.

Funding and Future Prospects

Funding for the project is already underway, with the city securing $1 million in state allocation to kickstart the initiative. Offering outdoor spaces for rental and hosting events could further generate revenue, with Schneemann expressing optimism about the demand for event spaces in the area. “We think that from a business perspective, the portfolio looks pretty good for the city,” he remarked.

As city leaders look ahead, Balk is excited about the potential of transforming the grounds into a hub for community events, stating it could elevate Farmington’s cultural landscape. “It’s such a landmark for our city. There are so many opportunities for future use,” she added.

Community Engagement and Historical Preservation

With a strong focus on historical preservation, the city has consulted with the Historical Society of Michigan during the planning process, ensuring that any renovations remain respectful to the mansion’s storied past. Schneemann believes the project could offer the best of both worlds: preserving a cherished community landmark while providing a modern space for events.

“We’ve never had a venue quite like this in the history of Farmington,” he pointed out, highlighting the unique opportunity this project presents for residents wishing to host significant life events like weddings.

Conclusion

The plans for the Governor Warner Mansion grounds are generating enthusiasm among city officials and residents alike. As development moves forward, Farmington looks to reinvigorate its historic landmark and create a welcoming space for the community to gather and celebrate life’s moments.
