City of Grand Rapids Set to Expand with New Sports Facilities

The city of Grand Rapids is gearing up for significant growth and transformation. Recently, the Michigan Strategic Fund board approved multiple incentives aimed at supporting numerous projects in the area, including the construction of new sports facilities and public amenities.

Major Developments in Grand Rapids

Among the most notable projects is a large Transformational Brownfield Plan incentive package worth $252.3 million, which is directed towards building the Acrisure Amphitheater and a new soccer stadium in the city. This ambitious initiative is spearheaded by Grand Action 2.0 and the Grand Rapids Brownfield Redevelopment Authority, with an expected investment of over $700 million in the city.

The Acrisure Amphitheater will be an impressive site, covering 296,109 square feet and holding 12,160 seats. Its location is conveniently situated on a 10.6-acre area at 201 Market Ave., right along the scenic Grand River. The amphitheater aims to be a centerpiece for entertainment and events in the region.

Additional Features of the Amphitheater Project

This project not only encapsulates the amphitheater but also includes several other developments. One of these is a 475,207-square-foot apartment building, which will consist of 475 residential units and a parking garage. Moreover, a soccer stadium of 134,500 square feet with a capacity of 8,500 seats is being planned. This stadium will be located on an 8.2-acre site on the city’s west side.

Alongside these, a mixed-use development known as The Stadium District Tower is set to rise, featuring 263,600 square feet dedicated to retail or restaurant space, office areas, and 260 apartment units. Additionally, the development will have a 350-space parking structure.

City’s Leadership Responds

Mayor Rosalynn Bliss expressed her enthusiasm over the approved funds, stating that they will help the city elevate the legacy of Grand Action. “These projects will be beneficial to local businesses and are poised to spur new development,” she noted. She also highlighted the opportunity to revitalize a significant portion of the riverfront property.

Public Amenities on the Rise in Northville

In another part of Michigan, the City of Northville is also making progress. The Michigan Strategic Fund board has greenlighted a request for $2.08 million to support the redevelopment of the former Northville Downs site, which spans 7.85 acres. The funding will direct public amenities planned for the location and will help reimburse the city and its partner for infrastructure improvements.

The Vision for Northville

This redevelopment aims to restore the Rouge River to its natural state, while also providing a public park for the community. Seth Herkowitz, chief operating officer for Hunter Pasteur, noted that the project constitutes one of the most important green infrastructure efforts in the state and promises numerous benefits for the region.

Current plans involve daylighting the river and creating a vibrant public space called River Park. The encompassing project, titled The Downs, will include a mix of single-family homes, townhouses, condominiums, apartments, and small businesses, aiming at enhancing community connectivity.

Additional Funding and Support

The Northville project is set to incorporate various public benefits, such as 443 new housing units, 18,580 square feet of retail space, and two major parks. The initiative also has backing from the federal American Rescue Plan Act which allocated $2.5 million, in addition to a $1 million grant from the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy.

Other Projects Across Michigan

The Michigan Strategic Fund board also approved a $1.2 million grant to Northland Corp., a refrigeration company based in Greenville, to help expand its facility. This expansion is expected to generate up to 200 jobs and retain 116 jobs as they increase their manufacturing capacity.

With these developments, Grand Rapids and Northville are set to see major transformations that promise to enhance local economies, create new job opportunities, and improve overall community well-being.
