Florida Neighbor Found Guilty of Manslaughter in High-Profile Neighborhood Dispute Case

Florida Jury Convicts Neighbor of Manslaughter with a Firearm in Dramatic Neighborhood Dispute

In a recent court hearing in the city of Ocala, Florida, neighbors, friends, and family of the shooting victim, Ajike “AJ” Shantrell Owens, finally received the justice they had been seeking. After deliberating for approximately two and a half hours, the jury announced that Susan Louise Lorincz was found guilty of manslaughter with a firearm.

Deciding the Fate of Susan Lorincz

Now facing up to 30 years in prison, Lorincz has been in and out of suicide watch at the Marion County Jail since her apprehension more than a year ago. The sentencing process will be determined after the Florida Department of Corrections completes a thorough pre-sentencing investigation.

The convicting jury began their deliberations at 12:06 p.m. By 2:35 p.m, the bailiffs were alerted that a verdict had been reached. Circuit Judge Robert Hodges provided some final instructions before the court clerk read the verdict out loud. The jury made two inquiries before delivering their verdict – they wanted to hear the 911 calls made by Lorincz and sought more information about the damaged door evidence.

The Reaction

The courtroom remained silent from the defense team, their respect for the victim’s family palpable. State Attorney Bill Gladson issued a statement praising the jury’s decision and expressing his hope that the verdict would bring some closure for the victim’s family.

Similarly, Sheriff Billy Woods commended the outcome and applauded the detectives and prosecutors for their diligent work on the case. Civil rights personal injury lawyer Ben Crump, who had visited Ocala earlier in the week, also expressed his gratitude for the jury’s decision and recognized it as a significant step towards justice for the victim and her family.

A Mother’s Struggle and a Community’s Outcry

The victim, a 35-year-old single mother, was shot once in the right side of her chest with a .380-caliber handgun. She was standing outside Lorincz’s locked front door on the night of June 2, 2023. Owens is survived by four children, aged 4 to 13. Lorincz had allegedly chastised Owens’ children for being too noisy and for playing in an unpermitted area of their neighborhood. She had also allegedly used racial slurs when addressing the children, a claim she denies.

Owens’ tragic death led to numerous protests and rallies, with supporters calling for a higher charge. However, the State Attorney’s Office maintained that manslaughter was the appropriate charge. Ultimately, the prosecution and the defense presented their closing arguments articulating the reasonability of Lorincz’s fear and her right to protect herself.

Bringing Closure to a Devastating Loss

While this guilty verdict brings some closure, it also illustrates the continuing dilemma involving self-defense laws in the country. Laws are meant to maintain order and protect people; yet, situations like these challenge those laws and ask us to delve deeper into the complexities of human nature and society. With the conclusion of this case, it is hoped that the victim’s family can find solace and that it provides a stern reminder of the consequences of violence.
