A Spark of Inspiration
It all began when Kyle Bostick’s wife sent him a video of another house syncing their lights to a Halloween song they adored. “I thought, there’s no way I could do something like that. It seemed so complicated,” Kyle recalls, laughing at how naive he was at the start. But the spark had been ignited, and curiosity took over. After purchasing someone else’s program and figuring out how it worked, the project quickly evolved from humble beginnings into a dazzling spectacle.
From Small Show to Spectacular Display
Starting small, the display gradually expanded, almost as if it had a life of its own. “It just kind of grew and spiraled out of control,” Kyle explains. “We kept thinking, we should add this, we should add that—and before we knew it, we were decorating with 15,000 twinkling lights!”
The Labor of Love
Every single one of those lights wasn’t just thrown out haphazardly. Kyle notes, “You have to go through and physically push one in. Each light you see, we had to insert it one at a time.” Trying to picture the effort involved, I asked him how his fingers felt after all that work. “My thumb is blistery,” he chuckled, hinting that the rest of his fingers weren’t looped into an easy job either. The grand Halloween display took a whopping 1800 hours of programming to sync lights to a lively playlist featuring 18 classic songs, including favorites like “Ghostbusters,” “Bloody Mary” from *Wednesday*, and even tunes from *Nightmare Before Christmas*.
Community Impact
Over the years, the Bostick home has popularized Halloween in the neighborhood. Kyle notes how the decorations have inspired neighboring houses. “No other house on the street had any decorations when we started,” he said. “We probably had six trick-or-treaters back then. Last year, we had thousands—buses full of kids are coming now!” It’s heartwarming to see how one family’s enthusiasm has sparked community spirit, leading others to join in with their decorations.
Cutting Back for Comfort
However, all this popularity has come with its challenges. Traffic often becomes chaotic due to the influx of visitors, prompting the Bosticks to adjust their showtimes. To ease congestion, they decided to limit the display to Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights from 7 PM to 11 PM.
A Sneak Peek into Christmas
As Halloween draws to a close, the Bosticks have no intentions of slowing down. Their much-anticipated Christmas display is set to take the show on the road, and it sounds absolutely thrilling. “This year, it will span 3/4 of a mile,” Kyle proudly states. With plans for a staggering 250,000 lights, this holiday extravaganza is sure to be unlike anything Metro Detroit has ever witnessed!
