Wedged with unrest, the Harris Campaign has officially stated it does not back an arms embargo on Israel. The clarification came in response to reports that suggested Harris’s potential openness to discuss restrictions on weaponry with leaders of the Uncommitted movement. Her national security adviser, Phil Gordon, countered the speculation via an assertive post on a popular social media platform.
Gordon conveyed that Harris has repeatedly emphasized the necessity for Israel to fortify itself against Iran and its associated terror groups, making certain of her position amidst the turmoil. He asserted, “She [Harris] will always ensure Israel is able to defend itself against Iran and Iran-backed terrorist groups”. Gordon supported his defence of Harris’s stance by favouring ongoing endeavours to protect innocent lives in Gaza and to uphold international humanitarian law amidst the unrest in the Middle East.
The ripples from this statement resonate as the strain in the Middle East escalates. Iran has sworn retribution against Israel following the assassination of the political leader of Hamas, Ismail Haniyeh, in Tehran. Israel is yet to claim responsibility, as the United States boosts its armament supplies to Israel. As leaders of the Uncommitted movement continue to pressure Harris, she stands firm in her decision to continue US military support for Israel.
A rally hosted by Harris in Detroit, known for a large Arab-American population, turned sour when pro-Palestinian protestors disrupted the event. The demonstrators accused Harris of endorsing genocide against Palestinians, voicing their concerns during her speech. In response to their allegations, Harris emphasized the value of every voice, stating “Everyone’s voice matters.” However, she also warned the crowd that undermining her efforts would only lead to garnering more support for her political adversary, Donald Trump.
Despite the fraught tension, recent surveys put Harris ahead in the electoral race. The latest poll from Marquette University Law School reveals a favourable dynamic for Harris, who is found to be leading Trump 53% to 47% among probable voters. This is a significant leap from when her predecessor, Mr Biden, was falling behind Trump in the race both nationally and in several decisive states.
As the political atmosphere escalates, Harris continues to steer her campaign forward amidst escalating global tensions and formidable public opposition.
