Baltimore is once again on high heat alert this week. This time, the ‘feel-like’ temperatures are expected to hit the triple digits. A heat advisory has been issued on Thursday, as actual temperatures are predicted to be in the mids to upper 90s, but the combined effect of humidity pushes up the heat index values to a staggering 105+ leading to the sweltering heat.
However, the conditions on Friday are predicted to worsen. The heat index, which is an estimate of how hot the temperature feels to the human body when the humidity is factored in, is set to rise between 105 to 110 on Friday. Although it is not common to reach such high indices, the combined effects of high temperatures and exceedingly high humidity make it possible.
This week’s temperatures are contributing to what could become one of the hottest summers in recent memory. This follows a global trend of rising temperatures and increasing occurrence of extreme weather conditions around the world.
A slight relief is on the horizon though. Late Friday, a disturbance in the atmosphere is predicted to bring some scattered showers and thunderstorms during the latter parts of the afternoon and early evening. These are expected to offer a temporary reprieve from the soaring temperatures and oppressive humidity.
The latest weather forecasts suggest that the rain chances will continue well into the weekend, with possible showers and thunderstorms on both Saturday and Sunday afternoons and evenings. This could result in significantly milder weather conditions during this period.
Looking ahead, as of early next week, temperatures are expected to cool off significantly. The prevailing intense heat and humidity are set to make way for milder weather, with temperatures sliding down to the upper 80s by next Tuesday. This shift in weather pattern is likely to continue in the foreseeable future, offering more comfortable weather conditions to Baltimore residents.
While authorities continue to monitor the heat wave, it is also crucial for residents to stay updated and take necessary precautions against the scorching temperatures. Especially vulnerable are the elderly, children, and people with underlying health conditions.
Keep hydrated, stay indoors during the peak heat times, and keep an eye on the vulnerable members of your community. Stay updated with the latest weather bulletins for continuous updates and safety guidelines. The safety and wellbeing of everyone is a collective responsibility. Let’s keep Baltimore safe.
