Giant Inflatable Duck Takes Over Farmington Park for a Good Cause

Any given day in Farmington, you might expect to see squirrels, birds, and the occasional dog frolicking in Shiawassee Park. But this week, a much larger and more unexpected guest made a splash — a six-story-tall inflatable duck!

The towering yellow visitor isn’t just here for spectacle, though. This oversized rubber ducky became the star attraction of a unique charitable endeavor. A local nonprofit organization that provides social services held a rubber ducky race in the nearby Rouge River, all in a bid to raise funds for their food pantry.

The organization requires approximately $14,000 on a monthly basis to cover its food bills, as it feeds up to 750 families across Farmington, Livonia, Northville, Novi, Redford Township, Southfield, West Bloomfield Township, and their neighborhoods.

The ducky race saw around 8,000 mini versions dropped into the flowing Rouge River this Wednesday. The total amount raised from this quirky event has yet to be quantified, but one thing’s for sure – it made a big splash in the local community!

The giant duck certainly drew attention from people passing through the park. According to its owner, the 15-ton inflatable bird is the “world’s largest duck“.

The rubber duck usually resides inside a small grocery store operated by the same nonprofit organization, on the campus of the former St. Alexander’s Catholic Church on Shiawassee Street in Farmington. But for this week, its larger cousin took the limelight.

Whether it secured the title of “world’s largest duck” or not, this giant inflatable ducky certainly raised some sizable awareness for a worthy cause!
