Vice President Kamala Harris Visits UAW Union, Emphasizing ‘Liberty’ and Collective Bargaining Rights
In Wayne, Michigan, Vice President Kamala Harris stood before a crowd of dedicated United Auto Workers (UAW), championing ‘the collective’ and the right to negotiate wages and working conditions. This visit took place as part of her two-day campaign journey through Michigan alongside her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz.
“We just want fairness,” Harris told her audience, insisting on respect and dignity for everyone. “We want to recognize the pride all people have to freedom and liberty, to make choices, especially those that are about heart and home and not have their government telling them what to do.”
Celebrating collective bargaining, she added: “We believe in the collective. We’re not falling for these folks who are trying to divide us… trying to separate us, trying to pull us apart. That’s not where the strength lies.”
The visit by Harris and Walz had come after a rally in the same state the day prior, drawing in attention on the economic panorama – price gouging, rising rents, and skyrocketing prescription costs.
The focus of the visit yesterday, however, was on the critical role of unions and the middle class. The upcoming four years, says Harris, will have a substantial impact on auto makers regarding regulations, legislation, and policies affecting electric vehicles and union bargaining rights.
In the face of this, Walz criticised President Trump’s predicted Trump’s approach, expressing apprehension that it would push the nation ‘backwards’.
The responses from President Trump’s team were swift, pointing out his accomplishments in the auto industry and criticizing both Harris and Walz. They argued that the issues on Harris and Walz’s agenda weren’t the real worries of Michiganders, insisting these voters were more concerned about issues like the stock market crash and the border crisis.
These arguments were met with sharp rebuttals from the pro-union side. Shawn Fain, the UAW president, praised Harris and Walz as ‘working-class people’. He slammed Trump and his running mate as out of touch, serving their interests and the billionaire class.
Interestingly, this visit put a spotlight on Wayne, a community with economic challenges that mirrors the diverse demographics of the nation. Observers commented that by coming to Wayne, Harris is acknowledging the hard-working day-to-day workers in the manufacturing and innovation sectors.
