Following former President Joe Biden’s decision to end his 2024 campaign, Vice President Kamala Harris has emerged as
the favorite to replace him as the party’s nominee for President. As the potential presidential candidate, one of the key decisions for Harris will be choosing her Vice Presidential (VP) candidate. This choice will become increasingly crucial as the Democratic National Convention, where Harris will likely be officially nominated, rapidly approaches.
Democrats across the nation, including North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, and Arizona Senator Mark Kelly, have reportedly given their personal and financial details to be considered for the position. The list of prospective VPs is said to consist of almost ten names, with the majority being elected officials.
Josh Shapiro, the current Governor of Pennsylvania, has been tipped as a potential VP running mate for Harris. Since his landslide victory in 2022, Shapiro has been viewed as a strong prospect for future presidential campaigns and has been commended as a “great partner” by Vice President Harris.
Roy Cooper, the Governor of North Carolina, is also considered a viable VP pick. Successful in maintaining his position during the 2020 elections, Cooper was quick to endorse Harris and express his belief in her ability to lead the country with thought and integrity.
The Senator from Arizona, Mark Kelly, also figures in the list of potential VP candidates. Having a national recognition due to his career as an astronaut and his marriage to former representative Gabby Giffords, Kelly has consistently backed the Democratic Party and its priorities throughout his tenure.
California’s Governor, Gavin Newsom, another top VP prospect, has already endorsed Harris and, like other governors being considered, has led his state effectively through Covid-19. With a history of strong leadership in repelling legislative efforts to restrict LGBTQ community rights, among other things, Newsom presents a strong case. However, his VP candidacy may present constitutional hurdles given that both he and Harris hail from California.
After managing to win the re-election in a predominantly red state, the Governor of Kentucky, Andy Beshear, is being floated as a potential vice-presidential candidate for Harris. Notably, Beshear has expressed openness to the possibility of running. His popularity as a Governor and his handling of diverse crises, including a pandemic and subsequent economic fallout, make him an attractive choice.
Current Transportation Secretary and former Democratic Presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg is also a possibility. Known for his centrist stance and his historic run as the first openly gay man launching a competitive presidential campaign, Buttigieg would be seen by many as a distinctive choice. His notable attacks on Republicans have further endeared him to the Democratic party.
As the countdown to the Democratic National Convention continues, Harris’s choice of VP will be integral in shaping the future course of the Democratic party and the 2024 Presidential Race.
