Livonia is embarking on a transformative journey with the construction of a new senior wellness center, part of a multi-phase development aimed at revitalizing the city. With a focus on creating a vibrant, walkable community, the project includes demolishing outdated structures and making way for new mixed-use spaces designed to enhance residents’ quality of life. This ambitious plan is set to reshape the local landscape, promote community engagement, and retain local talent, making Livonia a more attractive destination for all.
Big things are happening in Livonia! As the city takes bold steps toward a more vibrant future, construction of the new senior wellness center is officially underway, marking the start of an exciting multi-phase project. This isn’t just any construction project; it’s part of a four-phase mixed-use development that aims to revamp the community along Five Mile and Farmington Roads.
Livonia is moving towards a vision where residents can enjoy a walkable and bikeable community. According to community surveys conducted back in 2016, Livonians expressed a strong desire for a centralized space that blends shopping, housing, dining, and office areas. It’s a dream coming to life, and with input from the community shaping these plans, it truly feels like a labor of love.
At the heart of this development is the new senior wellness center, which promises to offer an enhanced space for families and seniors alike. The center is designed as a safe gathering spot and will feature delightful spaces for outdoor festivals, live music, and stunning art installations. Unlike the current senior center, which many agree is a bit cramped and outdated, the new facility will include a larger dining area, a state-of-the-art fitness center, and various services aimed at improving the lives of seniors.
But to make way for progress, several buildings are set to be demolished, including City Hall, Sam’s Place, and the old courthouse. With the new locations anticipated to be completed by the end of 2025, Livonia’s urban landscape will soon be transformed. Mayor Maureen Miller Brosnan shared the ambition of retaining local talent by creating an attractive urban center, a strategy designed to keep young people invested in Livonia’s future. City Hall construction will kick off in 2026, followed by the building of a new police station slated for 2028.
The magnitude of this investment is noteworthy, with the estimated cost hovering between $62 million and $72 million. Thankfully, funding for the senior center is largely secured through various grants, showing a commitment to enhancing community services. However, there’s a need for community backing to support a property tax millage aimed at funding the forthcoming police station and renovations for fire stations.
For too long, Livonia has been lacking a centralized downtown area, but this development promises to change that. By appealing to the needs and desires of residents, planning efforts for this downtown began in earnest after a 2018 master plan update. The local Planning Commission’s endorsement of mixed-use spaces and community gathering areas signifies a big push towards a modern, cohesive neighborhood.
Longtime residents have been enthusiastic about creating a downtown vibe, often drawing comparisons to successful models from nearby cities such as Plymouth and Northville. This revitalized area is not only crucial for attracting private investments, but it also coincides with updated zoning laws that encourage mixed-use developments throughout Livonia.
Alongside these developments, plans are underway for additional areas, such as transforming a former Kmart site into a grocery store and residential units that respond to community requests for shopping and increased housing density. However, not everyone is on board. Some residents are raising concerns about increasing traffic and the potential hurdles for existing businesses with the emergence of new commercial developments.
As we charge ahead with this exciting new chapter, it’s clear that Livonia is committed to enhancing its community. With the promise of new spaces, engaging opportunities, and a stronger sense of belonging, the future is looking bright for this vibrant city.
