In a major crackdown, Livonia police seized over 90 pounds of fentanyl and more than $150,000 in cash linked to local drug activity. The operation stemmed from a routine traffic stop that uncovered extensive drug distribution efforts by a local resident. Investigators with help from a cooperating informant led to multiple raids, resulting in significant findings including cash, luxury items, and a dangerous amount of fentanyl. The alleged drug dealer now faces federal charges as Livonia continues its fight against drug trafficking.
In a significant crackdown on drug activity in the heart of Metro Detroit, the Livonia police department has made headlines with a stunning seizure of over 90 pounds of fentanyl alongside more than $150,000 in cash. This operation showcases the police force’s commitment to tackling the ongoing battle against drug distribution in the area, all sparked by a traffic stop that unfolded back in September 2023.
Initially, it all started with a routine traffic stop which turned out to be anything but ordinary. This stop led officers to identify a local resident, a 55-year-old man known by the street name “Blue.” Barry Willis, as per reports, was suspected of selling and distributing heroin. As law enforcement dug deeper, it became clear that this situation warranted closer scrutiny. The investigation was handed over to the combined efforts of the Livonia police and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).
In the pursuit of building a solid case, investigators worked with a cooperating individual (CI) who provided crucial information regarding Willis’s alleged drug activities. This CI had previously made purchases of heroin and presented vital evidence about ongoing transactions. Two controlled meetings were arranged, where the CI was monitored as they attempted to purchase heroin from Willis, allowing law enforcement to accumulate more concrete evidence of criminal behaviors.
The culmination of this investigation came on March 28, 2024, when police executed search warrants at various locations, including a Clinton Township residence, a stash house on Littlefield in Detroit, and a Citgo gas station on Livernois. With every location yielding remarkable findings, this operation turned into a significant victory against drug trafficking.
At the Clinton Township home, police uncovered a treasure trove of evidence including $133,242 in cash, luxury watches, a stunning gold chain, and even a handgun. The implications of this discovery suggested a life of luxury funded by illicit activities.
The most alarming results came from the stash house located on Littlefield. Police officers uncovered a staggering 2.6 kilograms (about 5.7 pounds) of cocaine and over 41 kilograms (approximately 90 pounds) of fentanyl in various forms. Considering the dangerous nature of fentanyl, the sheer size of this seizure is nothing short of chilling. Authorities estimated that the street value of the fentanyl alone sits around $4.5 million, a sum that poses the potential risk of causing fatal overdoses for over 20 million people.
Meanwhile, the search of the Citgo gas station did not disappoint either. Officers found another handgun and seized over $3,000 in cash, further tying operations to the drug distribution network led by Willis. It is worth noting that some of the cash recovered during the raids included pre-recorded funds provided to the CI by law enforcement as part of the investigation’s strategic planning.
Following this extensive operation, Barry Willis now faces federal charges related to the distribution and possession of controlled substances with the intent to distribute. This situation remains a strong reminder of the ongoing battle against drug-related crimes within our communities.
As Livonia continues to strengthen its stance against drug trafficking, the recent raids mark an essential step in the fight, ensuring that dangerous substances like fentanyl are removed from our streets.
