Livonia Rolls Out New Trash and Recycling Carts for a Cleaner Community
Livonia is buzzing with excitement as the city gears up to launch a fresh initiative aimed at keeping its streets cleaner and more organized. Thanks to a new five-year contract with Priority Waste, starting from December 1, residents will have the option to select either a 96-gallon or a 64-gallon cart for their trash and recycling needs. This change comes after the city’s recent contract with GFL Environmental came to a close, paving the way for this new partnership.
Your Choice, Your Cart
Mayor Maureen Miller Brosnan shared her enthusiasm, stating, “We are excited to provide these new carts to Livonia residents. We know this is a big change. But we are happy to offer residents the choice of the size of cart they will use.” Whether you’re a household that generates a lot of trash or one that produces just a little, there’s a perfect cart size for you waiting to be chosen. Those who don’t make a selection will automatically receive the larger 96-gallon bins, which makes life a bit easier for everyone!
Cleaner Streets and Happy Residents
The contract with Priority Waste is expected to cost around $7.2 million annually, and the city is investing about $4.14 million from its refuse fund to equip every household with one of these new carts—all at no cost to residents. Chris Jackett, Livonia’s chief of public relations, highlighted that one of the goals of this initiative is to keep the city’s streets free of litter.
Jackett mentioned that with the new carts, “If people have more trash bags than can fit in their cart, or just a single bag, those will still be collected.” However, the introduction of the carts is designed to minimize litter, as loose bags at the curb are often prone to getting ripped open. Instead, these secure carts promise to keep everything intact until the trucks roll by for collection.
Making Recycling Easier
The new carts aren’t just about trash, though—recycling is a big part of this initiative too. The larger recycling containers are expected to make it easier for residents to dispose of more recyclables, reducing the waste sent to landfills. “This initiative promotes sustainability and provides our residents with the opportunity to more easily participate in recycling efforts,” remarked Jim Baringhaus, a local commissioner. Simplifying recycling is key to encouraging more residents to join in.
Streamlined Collection Process
Another exciting development in this plan is the adoption of one-person trucks, which will help speed up the garbage collection process. This means that residents will see faster pickups without the trucks needing to frequently stop and leave their vehicles.
Matt Allen, director of public relations and government affairs for Priority Waste, expressed their eagerness, noting, “Priority is pleased to continue our technology-driven trash and recycling services for the tremendous residents in the City of Livonia for the next five years.”
Upcoming Events and Information
In the coming weeks, keep your eyes peeled—residents will have the chance to check out the new carts in person at various city events and locations. More details about the rollout, including ordering carts and answers to common questions, will be shared on the Livonia website and through upcoming mailers.
As Livonia steps into this new chapter, it looks like cleaner streets and simplified recycling are just around the corner. With a commitment to keeping the community looking its best, residents can feel good about participating in this new and exciting trash and recycling program!
