Madison Heights Embraces Halloween Spirit with Local Decor Tips
As the leaves start to turn and the air gets a bit crisper, Halloween enthusiasts in Madison Heights are gearing up to decorate their homes for the festive season. This year, whether you enjoy a simple pumpkin on the porch or plan to go all out with an elaborate display, there are plenty of decorating tips to suit any budget and style.
Keep it Seasonal with Hardy Plants
One of the best ways to celebrate autumn is through the beauty of plants and flowers. Holly Hayter, a local resident known for her imaginative skeleton decorations, also emphasizes the importance of using hardy mums and ornamental plants. These vibrant flowers not only add a pop of color but also last well beyond Halloween and into Thanksgiving.
“What you really want to do is have the plants and flowers last past Halloween,” says Matthew Colonius, owner of Piechnik’s Greenhouse & Garden Gate in Oakland Township. He recommends using colors like purple and white to complement the seasonal palette. “Hardy mums are a fantastic choice because they not only survive the fall but transition beautifully into winter,” he adds.
Choosing the Right Decorations
Pumpkins and gourds can create the perfect autumn atmosphere. With so many options available, you can find heirloom varieties that come in wonderful shapes and hues. However, one key tip from Colonius is to ensure you water your plants adequately, especially during dry spells. “With the dry weather we’ve had this fall, plants should be watered at least two or three times a week,” he reminds us. Keeping your arrangements watered not only keeps them healthy but helps prevent them from blowing away in the wind.
Bringing Custom Touches to Your Displays
If you want your decorations to stand out, incorporating unique elements is essential. “Adding ornamental grasses, like purple fountain grass, can really set your display apart,” Colonius suggests. Also, using straw bales or decorative cornstalks can enhance that festive vibe. After the Halloween season, consider switching out the autumn decor for birch logs and evergreens to prepare for winter festivities.
Lighting Up the Neighborhood
Another exciting way to celebrate the season is through twinkling lights. Whether it’s a simple strand of lights outlining your doorframe or a grand display that lights up your entire house, lights can bring a magical touch to your decorations. The Bostick family, known for their spectacular light shows in Garden City, brightly lights up their home with thousands of bulbs.
“If you’re doing standard decorations, outlining your house with lights is a lovely way to keep it festive without breaking the bank,” advises Kyle Bostick of the Bostick Family Light Show. He also mentions that for those looking to create synchronized light shows, starting with basic props like tombstones, bats, and spiders can help bring your vision to life.
The Famous Skeleton House
Of course, we cannot forget the skeletons! Holly Hayter’s home, affectionately nicknamed “the skeleton house,” takes Halloween decorating to another level. With seven skeletons and four skeleton dogs, Holly doesn’t just save her spooky decorations for Halloween. She outfits her skeletons in creative costumes for various occasions, keeping her display fresh and entertaining.
“I suggest buying decorations on clearance after Halloween for the following year,” Holly shares, emphasizing the importance of planning ahead and finding the best deals.
Get Creative, Get Festive!
This Halloween season in Madison Heights is brimming with opportunities for creativity and community spirit. From utilizing beautiful seasonal plants and lighting to embracing playful skeleton displays, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Whether you’re a minimalist or a maximalist in your decorating style, the most important part is to have fun and soak in the festive season!
