Then, just a few weeks later, there’s another boost coming on February 21, 2025, when the wage will jump to a whopping $12.48 an hour.
For those working in industries like restaurants and hospitality, minimum wage workers will also see a change. Starting February 21, 2025, tipped employees will have their minimum wage raised to $5.99 an hour. This change is part of a larger movement to phase out the old tipped wage system, aiming for these workers to eventually earn 100% of the minimum wage by the year 2030.
The recent updates stem from a July 2024 ruling by the Michigan Supreme Court. The court decided that a previous legislative move to tweak a ballot proposal concerning wage increases was not lawful. This ruling has reinstated the original wage schedule from a 2018 ballot proposal that called for annual increases starting in 2025.
