A latest statistical thread has unraveled new truths about road incidents in Michigan. The study conducted by the Michigan State Police Criminal Justice Information Center divulges on the number of crashes, fatalities, injuries and instances of distracted and drunk driving across Michigan thoroughfares for the year 2023.
A minor drop of approximately 2% was observed in overall traffic crashes dropping from 293,341 in 2022 to 287,953 in 2023. Additionally, the number of resulting deaths decreased from 1,123 in 2022 to 1,095 in 2023. However, contrary to the general reduction in numbers, the injury crashes saw an increase from 51,066 in 2022 to 51,097 in 2023, a small increment of 31 crashes. Subsequently, fatalities rose from 70,281 in 2022 to 71,085 in 2023- a 1% increase which contributed to 804 more injuries.
The occurrence of accidents concerning pedestrians saw a significant hike of 11%, escalating from 1,897 in 2022 to 2,114 in 2023. Concurrently, fatalities involving pedestrians also surged 6% from 173 in 2022 to 183 in 2023. The number of crashes involving bicyclists saw a 10% elevation from 1,340 in 2022 to 1,480 in 2023. However, bicyclist casualties experienced a slump, declining 33% from 36 in 2022 to 24 in 2023.
Statistics for motorcycle crashes showed a fall of 3%, decreasing from 3,158 in 2022 to 3,056 in 2023. Correspondingly, fatalities of motorcyclists plummeted as 165 motorcyclists lost their lives in 2023 as opposed to 173 in 2022.
Alcohol-related accident cases noticed a 6% shrinkage from 9,331 in 2022 to 8,817 in 2023, and drug-related crashes lowered by 8% from 2,452 in 2022 to 2,250 in 2023. In the light of these figures, the number of alcohol-related deaths also lessened from 322 in 2022 to 297 in 2023, a decrease of 8%. However, drug-related deaths saw a minimal rise of 3% from 249 in 2022 to 256 in 2023.
Teenager casualties rose by 20% from 55 in 2022 to 66 deaths in 2023. Crashes involving drivers between the age group of 16 to 20, classified as ‘young drivers’ by the State Police, negated by 1% from 46,011 in 2022 to 45,577 in 2023. However, fatal accidents and deaths involving ‘young drivers’ escalated in 2023, marking an increase of 5 accidents and 8 additional deaths from the year 2022.
Work zone accidents took a significant leap of 8% in 2023 compared to the earlier year. However, crash-related deaths saw a slight decrease from 22 deaths in 2022 to 21 in 2023. Interestingly, the number of crashes involving deer was almost consistent, with a minor drop from 58,984 in 2022 to 58,806 in 2023.
The frequency of aggressive driving related accidents saw a decline as in 2023, there were 164,505 such accidents in contrast to 168,472 accidents in 2022. Furthermore, Michigan saw a decrease in cellphone-related crashes, with a 5% fall observed – from 2405 in 2022 to 2284 in 2023. Cases of distracted driving-induced incidents also reduced by 2%, decreasing from 15,441 in 2022 to 15,136 in 2023.
The findings from these statistics underline the importance of road safety measures and strict adherence to traffic norms, encouraging motorists to drive responsibly.
